I spied a Golden 39A today and had some questions about it. It was a pre safety version, I know it must be newer than 1984 or so. It had a small objective Redfield on it, and I want to make sure that these guns were indeed drilled and tapped for scopes. If it was drilled outside of factory I'm likely not interested. It was in very good condition with just some marks on the forearm. Factory sling swivels were there and in great shape. Price was $375. I really wanted a straight stocked version (Mountie) but this one has me looking...
Were these guns all drilled and tapped at the factory? Thanks.

Buy it, you won't regret it. The Mountie is tapped with 2 holes in the front and 1 in the rear if I recall correctly all on the flat area above the bolt. These guns will last a lifetime and are a joy to shoot. you will always be able to get your money out of it but will never want to.

The three I owned were factory D & T and you mounted a plate on top of the receiver and the plate was grooved for tip off claw mounts. As far as I know all the Marlins were factory D&T.

the model 39 has only one weakness, don't allow anyone to dry fire it, firing pins will break.

Buy it before some one else does! Thats a very good price for a 39A in very good condition. I love mine and shoot it often. I like using CCI CB Longs on chipmunks around the house. Very accurate gun. Although, it's time to sight it in with long rifle shells for squirrel huntin'.

For the fellow with hunting on his mind, I have never know a better .22 rifle than the 39, I have spent a lifetime trying to find a better .22 than the Marlin 39, I've got a heck of a lot of rifles and none of them are better than a good 39.

I just picked up a Golden-39A and was wondering if there are any tricks to taking it apart. I assume the knob on the right side of the receiver is for that but am wondering if there is anything I need to do (hammer up or down, action open or closed, magazine tube in or out,...) before I unscrew it and start pulling. I have wanted one since I was a kid and finally found one I liked.
Edit: I was looking at the Numrich sight to see what spare parts are available and saw they listed 39A early models and 39A late models. Where is the boundary between early and late?

Making absolutely sure the rifle is unloaded should be your first step, next I lay the rifle down across my two legs (knees) put the hammer on the safety notch, open the bolt/lever(optional) and unscrew the knurled knob on the side of the action with the ejection port. With the base of my palm I strike the action with the palm of my hand. Now you have the two sections of the rifle in two pieces.

My dad let me pick out any non-semi auto .22 for my 6th grade graduation.
I wanted a lever gun.
I am SO glad he encouraged me to get the golden 39 M instead of the browning I was looking at. Yeah, he saved some $$ on the deal, but IMO the G39M is the bee's knee's of .22's.
It is crazy accurate in the field, SO easy to shoot, etc etc.
I have hit 2 consecuative clay birds in hand thrown trap with it. ( couldnt do it again, but the first 2, not thinking too much, were hits).
GREAT gun. I didnt know they were so expensive now.
Oh, yes, mine was D&T from the factory. Bought in 1981 or 1982.
Quit giving in inch by inch then looking back to lament the mile behind ya and wonder how to preserve those few feet left in front of ya. They'll never stop until they're stopped. That's a fact.

$375.00 is about the least you'll pay for one unless the owner doesn't know what they have.

After much soaking in CRC & WD-40 and tapping with a hammer handle I was finally able to break it down. There was a ton of crud in there. I cleaned it real good and lubed it with Mil-Spec gun oil. I goes completely back together now and seems to function better.

A pawnshop in my area has a 39A Golden for $299, some rust, but not a bad looking little rifle.
