I e-mailed pac-nor and got chris and asked if I could get a rechamber done from my 7 mm rem mag in a weatherby vanguard VGX to a 9.3x64. Chris e-mailed me back and said no because the breneke is a bit longer than the 7 mm rem mag and the magazine wont fit it.

Well the confusing thing to me is that another post on here stated that someone had a 7 mm rem mag and could convert it over to things like a 7 mm stw or things like that. So why can't I convert it to what I want it to.

Please help the confused. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/help.gif" alt="" />

Not being to familiar with the Howa/ Vanguard action I can only speculate that the action itself is also to short. In other words, say a long m700 action is the same length in 30-06 or .375H&H. So you can take a m700 long action medium mag and convert it to a long mag with out too much fuss. Since I have never seen a Howa in .300 Weatherby or .375H&H I have to believe that its to short to be swapped over. Also to say it cant be done is probably not true either. It may be that Pac-Nor does not do that kind of extensive modification. After all they are in the barrel business not necessarily the gun smithing business. In other words you could pay some one to open it all up but in the end you could probably have bought two or more actions that were already set up for the length of cartridge you want. Hope this helps.

445SM,

A bit of research might have avoided your consternation. The unfortunate situation is that the 9.3x64 is kind of a bastard case. It does not share it's unique head dimentions with anything else. (Except the .376 Steyr)

Your 7mm Mag has a standard magnum head size of .532" The 9.3x64 has a rebated rim (ala .284 Win.) of .492" I will further speculate that Chris is referring to this .040" of the bolt face being too large likely would not give you reliable extraction. Which would'nt do anything for reliability in the field.

When I think of Cartridge conversions, I automatically reach for John J. Donnely's book: [color:"blue"]The Handloader's Manual of Cartridge Conversions [/color] I find it an invaluable reference and one of the best $25 I ever spent.

I am planning on building a 9.3x64, myself. But I am planning on doing it on a Pre '64 M-70 that was originally a .270. Therefore the bolt face must be opened up by .019". Likely the feed rails will need to be altered, as well. The 9.3x64 has a loaded length of 3.43". That is only .010" longer than the .30-06. So I believe a standard magazine will work. Hope this helps...the9.3Guy

P.S. Know that 9.3x64 brass is rather scarce. I believe that only RWS makes it. (I have some)

A long Rem 700 has a magazine length of around 3.65". I do not have a Howa or a Vanguard to check, but I suspect the mag. length is shorter. So, this may be the reason.

I'll assume that you mean rebarrel rather than rechamber since it's hardly possible to rechamber a 7mm rifle to 9.3mm without reboring the barrel as well. Reboring is not a real big deal but Pac Nor does not do that work. If you wanna rebarrel it, or rebore it, there's no huge problem except for the bolt face.

The 7 Rem has a bolt face of .532 but the 9.3 x 64 has a bolt face of .496. The bolt face could be bushed down but that's not real common and again, I don't think that PN offers that service.

The 9.3 x 64 does have a std ctg. length that is about .065 longer than the 7 RM however the Howas (vanguards) have been made in Wby calibers as well, and they are quite a bit longer than the 9.3 x 64.

I'd think the mag length is not really an issue but the other two certainly are.

You are better off selling it and buying a 30-06 for your project. You'll be money ahead.
