I recently bought a mid 50's model F in 250-3000. I have tried some 100 grain Hornay's with poor results. I also shot some 87grain Sierra's with great success. Is the Sierra bullet tough enough to shoot mid sized deer?

Maybe, but I've always had reservations on the Sierras as game bullets. Get some Speer hot cores in 87 and you won't do better.

Sierras are fine and do the job,,,but Speer has better and deeper
penetration. So as other said if ya can load Speers do so you won't be sorry or chasing a long blood trail.

Thats all I used, and in my dads when I lived in ND. I think my brother uses Bergers, and sometimes v-max's. I believe they have 1-10 barrels. The Sierra's usually did not exit. Most of time it was bang-flops.

I use 87 grain Hornady spire points. I do have Speer hot cores but so far have not tried them. I also have a good supply of the old Norma 87 grainers as well as some primed Norma brass. But, likewise I have not put any together and this is why. Hornady's work fine for me.

Every time I see LBK's photo, I am impressed with the blood sprayed everywhere on the snow in the back ground. That 87 grain hornady just blitzed the crap out of that buck.

That bullet is humping out at 3017 FPS (chronographed). It is accurate AND very deadly. I just can't see 13 more grains killing any deader than the deer in that picture. Now that deer was heart shot. NOT by choice, but by circumstance. The deer was behind a deadfall and the only place I could connect was the heart. I rested the rifle and fired. The deer ran. I followed post haste and saw the run the deer departed on. I could NOT believe my eyes. The snow was read with blood for about 40 yards. Then there the deer lay. I couldn't believe such a small bullet could wreak such havoc on the animal. The load works equally out of a .250-3000 EG as it does out of the 1920. I personally see no need to change anything.

The 250/87 combo does things that gun rags would have you believe are impossible. But then they would not sell the magazines. I remember articles referring to the 250 chambered in the xp 100 as a 250 yard deer cartridge. Then the next type tapper would say it is a marginal deer cartridge much past 100 yards from a rifle. I am paraphrasing of course but that is how a teen/young twenties guy took it.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong. I realize this is a Savage collectors forum. But we ARE talking about the 250-3000 Savage round. And you teen/young twenties guys listen up. MY 87 grain pill, travelling 3018 FPS is developing 1759.14 foot pounds of energy at the muzzle. I do not claim to be a mathmatician in any sense, but it is my understanding that to HUMANELY kill a deer, 1000 foot pounds will do it. If one of you 20 year olds want to stand out there at 200 and put an apple on your noggan and let me squeeze one off, have at it. If I hit the apple your safe, but if I'm a couple of inches low, don't worry, someone said it's marginal at 100 yds. Excuse me, but you wouldn't be reading this. you're DEAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Easy there Pilgrim, Screech could be a factor! wink

In all seriousness, it's the Indian not the arrow, although the 250-3000 or the 250 Savage is a really fine arrow. Placement is always critical and with modern bullets, the new monometalic premium bullets or gilded variations the 250 has a whole new relevance in deer hunting.

I'll tell you more when I get results from the field for my 80gr or 100gr Barnes bullets this deer season.

No easy there. Screech is NOT a factor. Too many young folks watching too much television. You poke a hole where it belongs in anything and it's not going to survive. End of story!!! .250 diameter, or .450 diameter if it's where it belongs, something will be very much expired!!!
