A lot of exploding guns. Rimfire central has been reporting on this for a while. From what I understand, the Magnum Research ones have a port drilled in the barrel close to the chamber to vent "excess" pressure. Other guns, I believe, suffer from premature unlocking of the bolt...... which can be unpleasant.
IIRC, the pressure spike in the .17's is very much steeper than a .22 mag.

Yep...Remington took its 597 off the market, and Mag Research took their semi-auto model off too....

Is there any trouble with HMR barrels on the Ruger 10-22 magnum action?

Considering that the engineers at Remington and Magnum Research have been unable to get the 17HMR to work on a production basis and that Ruger looked at it and decided not to even try, the odds that a home built Ruger 10/17HMR will run the same risks.

Boy, you learn something new every day.

So bolt actions are for tree rats, semi-auto's are for deer hunting.....Hmmm

Sounds like your theory is like our beloved anti-hunting people stating an AR is solely for killing PEOPLE, not enjoyment or hunting. I suspect the same crowd says Handguns are also solely for Killing people, not recreational shooting , defense or hunting.

Did someone above ( besides mw) say they were deer hunting with a 17hmr? Probably more humane than a 22lr, and many deer have sucummed to them.....
