On that budget, I'd look real hard & find a used Rem KS Mt. Rifle, or a Mt. Rifle, or a Mt. Guide, or a LSS Mt. Rifle.
270, 280, 7-08, '06 or 308 would all do.
6x Leupold.

I would buy a good used pre 64 M-70 with a scope or a good used Mauser such as a Whitworth, JC Higgen, Sears..You will have to shop a bit but a nice pre 64 can be bought for that. One of those commercail Mausers or FNs can be bought for less.
In a new gun I would buy a Ruger.

For me that's a heck of a good budget. $7-800 on a Win or Rem bolt gun and $2-300 on rings/bases and a descent Leupy scope.
Would have to think on which round.

I'd save more money and get what I really wanted. Hunting is something I take very serious. Not saying you couldn't get a decent set up for a grand, just each to their own. When I first started hunting, I used a 99 in 250-3000 with a weaver 4X and it killed a but load of deer and elk, not the best choice but what I could afford at the time.

i would buy a used remington 700 30-06, and put a leupold 3x9x40 on it, then buy an aftermarket trigger and stock. spending wisely, you might even be able to buy a used mcmillan and scope and rifle for all of it and still have money to have it bedded.

I would buy a used Rem 700 with a wood stock, have it pillar bedded, and buy a Bushnell 4200 4-16x50; this is a tack driving rig! The 4200's have the VariX III's beat hands down in quality, I have plenty of both!

If you had only 1,000.00 buy to buy one rifle/scope combo for the rest of your life, what would it be? Rem M700 ADL in 30-06 with a Leupold 2.5-8X on it. Nothing that I'll ever hunt that I couldn't do with that rig, it would last forever, I'd always have a ready supply of ammo.

You can get much for little money with a good used 700 ADL and a Leupold 3X9.

I'd keep my eyes open for a good, used Sako A series or earlier. It's easy to find a nice 06 or 7 mag with a nice scope for money you're talking about. Lou

I would go to the use gun rack, find the least expensive rifle I could find for a suitable cartridge, and use the difference to buy an Elk tag. I am in the less is best mode these days and more on the actual hunting part.

Hate to say it or think it, as I like a 260, 6.5x55, or 7/08 for MOST all I do, and a 338-06 would be tough to beat. That said, I'd pick the round I have NO game under my belt with, but that I can find ammo about anywhere on the planet if there is some to be found. 30-06 Rifle, a Used Sako L61R, an FN actioned sporter/Ruger 77, or Pre-64, likely in that order....or even a Howa.... Sorry no Rems for me, hit miss quality in MY experience, bolt handle breakage, poor customer service, again all in MY experience TRUMPS even the well made tackdrivers I owned, no more...Caveat Emptor. Now we have the rifle and caliber chosen....if a Ruger or Howa, why not just get a SS/Syn rifle while at it? The Sako and Ruger have almost fail proof scope mounting systems which I like, keeping thing simple and rugged. Talley aluminum lightweight one piece mounts on the others please Lastly, a light simple fixed FX-II in 4x33 or 6x36 in that order. Why? Larger FOV might save my hide in bear country at close range and for larger animals deer and up, it would be plenty but I likely would do just as well with the 6x..... Again, we are talking one rifle, one cartridge, one scope, for your lifetime. KISS is my philosophy. NEVER heard of an inaccurate Sako, nor those old Pre-Garcia's having a failure of any kind. I could 'settle' for that set up....odds are be happier with a lesser recoiling 270, but the '06 might be better for ammo sourcing. Thank goodness I have not HAD to have just one. I don't own any 30 cal now, but I will never argue against a '06 for the purpose of the question asked by the OP.
