Can a Ruger Hawkeye 338 Fed be rebarreled to a 35 Whelen. I am new to this stuff. What would the cost be?

It could but you'll never get a cartridge in the magazine.
The Ruger is a short action (assuming it's factory), the Whelen fits a long action.

Steelhead is right, but I just thought I'd mention rebarreling to .358 Win instead.

Well, you could just seat the bullets in the Whelen rounds really, really deeply!
Seriously, though, if you want to make it a .35 caliber, reboring (rather than rebarreling) to .358 Winchester makes more sense. In a bolt-action you can get within 125 fps or so of the Whelen velocities with a .358, and in the field that doesn't amount to much at all.

I didn't realize the 35 Whelen was a long action. Looks like I might have to unload the 338 Fed and pickup a Hawkeye in 35 Whelen. I really like the 338 Fed, but realize that it will more than likely become a reload only caliber.

You'll be wanting to reload for the Whelen too. What's wrong with the 338 Fed.? I don't own one, but kind of like it. It reminds Me of My 8x57.

More factory ammo available for the 338 Fed (5 diff loads) than ever were available for the 358 Win.

Sounds like a time to learn about reloading, A person can make very good ammo for a minimum equipment investment. If you like shooting, reloading opens worlds of possibilities..

Since it is Federal's cartridge, I don't see them stopping making ammo anytime soon.

I couldnt agree more. Definitely time to start reloading. I think there is a lot of potential for the 338 Federal. From the feedback I have read, the 200 grain Fusion is perfect for just about everything in North America. I dont know if I would challenge a griz with it, but I probably wouldnt try that with a 35 Whelen either. With that said, there is something intriguing about the 35 Whelen and I think I will add one to my fleet in the near future.

Go for it , you'll love it. Easy to load for and getting the expected speeds in the 35Wh is easy. I just got tired of carrying a 9.5# M70 in 35 Wh and not seeing anything to shoot at. Much easier to carry the 6# something Kimber and never shoot at anything.

Yeah, tzone, I was responding to his most recent writing. The one where he said he intended to get into reloading. Did I say anything wrong?
