I started elk hunting for real with my dad and brother. I used a 30-06 because that was what my dad had used, he had no use for a .270 Winchester. It seemed when he guided elk hunters back in the 30's, he saw too many elk wounded with the .270. I shot dozens of elk over the years with the venerable '06 but then decided I needed something flatter shooting.

I shot plenty of other critters with "'ol meat in the pot" including caribou in Alaska.

People were so impressed with "'ol meat in the pot" I even got it and myself immortalized on a book cover.

But for some reason I needed to get something flatter shooting, so I studied ballistics and decided the best all around caliber would be the 300 Weatherby, and better yet in a Sako.

I hunted with it and shot some big game, but I was told I needed something bigger, so I got a 30-378 Weatherby. I shot some game with it, but no elk. I came to the realization it was too much gun. Thankfully the guy I had sold the 300 Weatherby to, needed money, so I bought it back.

I loaded up some 180 Ballistic tips with 85 grains of IMR-7828 and they chronographed 3180. Taking it to the range after initial bore sighting, the gun printed just a bit to the left at 100 yards.

With a bit of adjusting I got it back more centered.

It may sound a bit optimistic to the casual Campfire member, but this is going to be good. I do however know the guy I sold "'ol meat in the pot" to and he still has it. Who knows what the future brings but I am certain this gun is a killer!

Get ol meat in the pot back. I sold one and git it back wish I had never sold it. It is my go to elk rifle(Remington 700 Bdl S/S 300 win). It took me a year to talk the guy I sold it to to sell it back to me.

I remember reading the article about you selling ol meat in the pot and thought to myself then that you would regret it. Or maybe its because I just like sako rifles and the 30-06. I hope you get it back someday.

Whether the elk is small, medium, or large, the smile is all the same...

Says alot about you as a hunter...
