The surface rust is a real thing with them. At least, with mine and it sounds like yours too. Both mine like to get it right on the front of the trigger guard, which is where my hand rubs on them when I'm packing it (its hard to still hunt successfully with it hanging on your shoulder) I end up bead blasting them after every hunting season, and once in a while hit it with a green potscrubber pad. The rest of the rifles have been rust free... But I oil my [bleep] after I get it wet. Today I could have kept a rifle dryer if I would have stood in the shower with it. Friggin near November, and it was raining to beat hell all day up at 6500' WTF?

The "harrowing" Moist Montucky chronicles, rather crack me up. Only due to their source................

Noone has exposed a Montucky to more wet weather than I.
Just one of many books I could write...............

Just one of many books I could write............... Perhaps not yet, but unless you live in Mawsynram, India, I'll eventually be the wet-Montucky champion. This is the central mountain in my neck of the woods, just 10 miles as the crow flies from my humble abode and includes and is surrounded by state hunting lands: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Waialeale We're also surrounded by the largest ocean on the planet. Well, on second thought, if my problem child keeps rusting so easily, I may leave her at home more often than not...and let you keep the title.

I get 180 inches of rain a year, coupled with six months of vacation per same. I tote a rifle everywhere I go and in every pursuit...some am more than a touch comfy in the assertion.
This is bolstered by a 17,000,000 acre playground,if only for starters..............

Six months of vacation per year?!? Dang! No wonder you're averaging over 62 posts per day! 426" > 180"...but I admittedly don't intend on toting my Montana "everywhere I go and in every pursuit." However, on any given day she goes afield here, I'm more likely to get rain than you. If I want to win by cheating, I'll take her on my boat and use her to dispatch subdued billfish, tuna and/or sharks. 'Nuff said, lest we hijack this thread.

PWC you obviously have not tried the gunsmithing in squarebanks. People are crowing about Doug who used to be from Downunderguns but the other guys in town charge $100 for even looking at your gun.

Montana is admittedly on the dry side but our Montana's do get to work in wet/freezing conditions

Oh, they'll still go bang everytime at 30 below BTW Yes they do... I find the MT's rust easier than about any stainless rifle I've owned, but I shoot the sub-stock with Eezox and wipe the tops side down... when I get around to it At the end of the day, they're just tools... shovels that go bang.

Ordered one in .308 about 2 weeks ago. It came in Thursday. Brought it home, started to mount my VX III 1.75-6X in Talley one piece B&R ... and found out Talley had shorted me one ring screw. I put in a call to them Friday AM and they're sending me several so I have an extra or two, but for the time being I'm about as frustrated ... well, frustrated.
I loaded up some ammo last evening in anticipation of going shooting next weekend. The throat is real long. My first cartridge just happened to come out 2.92. It never touched rifling when I chambered it, and I had to shorten it up to 2.82" max to go through the magazine, so everything is going to have a pretty hefty jump ... well, if nothing else works, maybe I'll give some X bullets or Nosler E-tips a whirl, they need to jump to rifling anyway. (This is known as "trying to make lemonade.")
All I can tell you for now is i'm really happy with the handling characteristics, weight, and so on.
Tom
