I was cruising through the web site and found this article from October '08 by JB. Is the .30-378 really the most popular Weatherby? More so than the .300? Does this refer to ammo sales or rifle sales, or maybe number of reloading dies sold? Interesting info.

I have read the same(although I cannot remember where or when).
That kind of surprised me, to be honest.
I would have thought that that honor would go to the 300 or perhaps 257 Roy.

I'm very curious as to how that figure was arrived at. I'd consider the 30-378 fairly successful as niche cartridges go but the 30 Roy has long been considered one of the true classics and is the only Wby I know of with factory loads available from most of the big makers.

There's got to be some kind of caveat to that statement somewhere.

Don't really know where JB got the data but knowing him, I'm sure he got it from a good source. However, I just checked the 2007 (latest one I have handy) list of the to 50 most popular die sets offered by RCBS. The 300 Roy was number 26 and the 257 Roy was number 29. The 30-378 was not on the list.

I read about it being number one a while back two. The article said it was their #1 selling rifle in a Wby Cart. It was not their #1 selling ammo though, which shows you those buying it aren't shooting it much.

Whatever a 7x57 can do a 270 can do better.

I meant to post the link to the article here on campfire. This was meant more as a curiosity than any criticism of fact. I've read lots of JB's writings over the years and have always liked his stuff.

I don't see how a cartidge that costs about $5-$6 per round can be very popular at all. But then I reload and don't like recoil, so the 30-378 wouldn't fit in my line up anyway.

I can see 300Wby out selling it as it has been around since WWII. The 30-378 is popular but not chambered near as long. I knew of one guy with one but he sold it after he put many many rounds down the bbl and it was shot out. I would stick with the 300Wby unless shooting specialized long rang equipment. Then I would go 338-378.

Although I own one, I suspect some major sorting of the data was needed to come up with that claim.

A pole on the Weatherby site show s the 300 more popular than all the other Weatherby cartridges combined; however, it doesn't list the 30-378. Perhaps it's included with the 300. Here's the link:

I don`t believe that the 30-378 is as popular as the 300 or will it ever be. However Weatherby should know best based on their sales orders from dealers.

28 Nosler,,,,300WSM,,,,338-378 Wby,,,,375 Ruger
