I just purchased a gun from a person I work with and it looks like he tried to refinish the wood without removing it from the gun. He got some of the stain/varnish on the metal parts of the gun. Is there anything special to use to remove this without damaging the surface of the metal? Any help would be appreciated.

I've always used a good paste-type paint remover such as TM-4 to remove hardened epoxy from the metal. If it's just varnish, you shouldn't have to leave it on very long. I have never noticed any damage, but I should point out that I have only used it on blued or stainless steel. If there is a different finish on the metal, all bets are off.
