Hi,

I just got a used one for a really good price. I'll hunt moose here in quebec with this gun....in fact I had no exact reason to buy another one but who said you need a reason to buy a new rifle?

Your impression on the Ruger Mark II series and what kind of accuracy should I expect from this rifle?

my primary rifle (for everything) is a wood/blue mk2 in 30-06. killed an elk with it last thursday in colorado and will kill some deer with it in about a week here at the farm. had the action bedded, barrel free floated, and trigger adjusted to 3#s. shoots 180gr partitions very well. i'd say you can expect very good to excellent accuracy once you find the loads your particular rifle likes.

BTW, if your trigger if heavy and rough like most come from the factory, it is easy to remedy. I worked mine down to a safe, clean 3 1/2#, no replacement parts. Easy to work on.

Congrats on the new family memeber. Mine, well the one that hunts most, is a .257 Roberts. It shot roughly 1.5" groups with a 100gr. TSX off the shelf. I didn't have time to get too deep into load development that year, and in the spring I had it full length bedded and the trigger worked down to about 3#. The same load will do .5" to 1" day in, day out. Most of the time it's around .625-.75". Great rifle. Could've done just as well in factory form, but that's just no fun. Took 6 does for cull with it last year. One ran about 40 yds. The rest were DRT.

If anything, I'd do the trigger to suit and shoot it. The bedding may or may not be an issue.

I have owned two M77s in 338.
Shot great with 225grain partitions with H4350-under an inch on a good day.
Nice rifles, IMO.

I have one in 270 and I love it it shoots MOA with factory and .5MOA with handloads. I would suggest a trigger job it made all the difference in the world.

Whatever a 7x57 can do a 270 can do better.

I had one for years. All I ever did to it was trigger work, as the factory trigger on those older models were mighty stiff. It shot 1" 3-shot groups with good handloads or Federal Premium 250 grain Nosler loads / Hornady 225 grain loads. It was a good, no nonsense game getter.

Oh yeah, I forgot-
I had a local gunsmith do a trigger job on both my Ruger 338s.
Certainly didn't hurt!!!

My .338 mag. is a Ruger Mod. 77 something or other. Stainless steel and a laminated stock. I had it glass bedded after the stock began splitting at the tang. I also put a Timney trigger on it. It came with open sights which I like for backup should something happen to the scope. The scope is a Leupold, VX-III, 1.5-5. This rifle is my moose hunting rig and my load is 73 grs. of Rldr-22 and a 225 gr. NorthFork. I get right around an inch group and 2800 fps.
I can tell you that this combo is very deadly on moose & would suggest it highly. I really like the 225 gr. Northfork - even better than the Partition since it's slightly more accurate.
Good luck & enjoy.

My Ruger .338 has a Spec-Tech trigger and 2.5-8x Leupold. I took it to Africa(Zim) for an Eland and ended up carrying it everyday and shot everything with 225 Noslers Partitions and Accubonds. I like the Partitions better. Knocked a big stallion Zebra DTR.It's a great travel rifle, easily replaced if the airlines lose it and the damn thing works...

Mine aren't .338's, but my 30/06, 7mm Rem and .300 Win Mag are all good shooters. My 30/06 and 7mm have been triggered, floated, bolts lapped and they shoot excellent. Both are MOA guns, the 300 has had no work done and it is a 2 MOA or better shooter without any load work, stock , trigger, nothing. I own a .358 Win in the new Hawkeye and it is awesome, several sub moa groups with handloads.

I like my Ruger rifles.

This has been my primary rifle for everthing from coyotes to elk for almost 4 years now. After a trigger job it shot 1/2" with factory Core-Lokts. My handloads do as well driving 225gr Interlocks to 2850 with 75gr of RL19. My best group is 2.915 at 450yds (yes it was hard for me to believe also). Right now it sports a Leupold compact 3x9x33. It now wears an HS Precision and target crown with a good bed job but honestly is doesn't shoot any better than with the plastic factory handle.

Hi,

I got the rifle in the mailbox and to my amazement, it wears a 22" barrel (closer to 21.5 in fact). All my search in the web resulted in that this rifle is made with a 24" except 1 result for an ad on gunbrkoer for a ruger Mark II 338winmag with a 22" barrel. confused

Does Ruger really produced Ruger MarkII 338wm with 22" barrels or is this barrel has been cut? confused

I will also send an email to ruger.

How are usually crowned ruger barrels? this will may be give me an hint on what happened...

I have two, and ditto. My heavy barrel .22-250 (MKII VT) has done half-MOA at 200 and the .300WM generally shoots about 3/4 MOA at 100.

Hee's a target from my .300WM and a 180g TSX @ 3038fps. The first shot flyer was a fouler.

i would have sent that rifle back to Ruger and they would have replaced the stock. they still might but with work done to it they may not as they can not prove that the bedding didn't do something to it even though you had it bedded to fix their problem. a call to their CS explaining what happened and why you did it might help unless you are content with that stock, crack and all.
