If you choose to spend less this year and save up for a really excellent pair later on, I can second the vote for the Nikon Action Extreme porro prisms. They're sharp as all get out and waterproof, too. Not small and lightweight, but if you get too small, they're hard to hold steady. My 7x35's are just right for me.

I don't expect mine to last forever, but it's nice to have a pair that I can lend to a buddy and not have to worry every second that they'll get scratched.

The Leupold Yosemites fit that description, too, and have many fans on this website.

I bought a pair of 8x42 legend roof prism for a truck glass and i like them a lot. [bought them on MuleDeers recomendation] On a hunt we once compared swaro 8x30,zeiss 10x40, pentax 10x50 and the 8x42 legends. In midday light they held their own with all the others.

These are very nice binoculars. In my opinion, they're within 10-15%(or better) of Swaro or Leica 8x42's.

I just replaced my Nikon 10X50 Actions with these:
Minox BV 10x42 BR Part# 62168
from Doug at CameralandNY.

The actions were/are very useable for @ $100.
The Minox are even better, in a much more compact package.
For less than $170 delivered, I don't know of
anything else that compares.

Sound's like a good buy. When money is tight you have to do what you have to do.
