Hey all,
I'm thinking of purchasing a model 99 for deer and hog hunting and really would like one with a 20" barrel. I know I've heard that Savage made some. Can anyone tell me what model/s I should be looking for and what caliber options I would have? I'd also like to know if these would be some of the harder 99s to find; I'm guessing they would. Thanks

Some of the 99Es had 20" barrels. For hunting I'd go with a 99F , it has a 22" barrel but you'd never know that extra 2" of barrel is there.

The 99A with tang safety also used a 20" barrel. You will see it in 20 and 22.
As to caliber, I'd go with a .300 Savage for deer and hogs. Lots of .308s in those models too if you want more recoil.

Hard to loose if you find a ratted 99H in .300.........they can be had, let my nice one go for $700 and it was a minty 30/30, I would think you could find a d&t gray hunter for under 5 bills, they are the redheaded stepchild of the pre-mils but are my favorites....

99H in 300????? there kinda rare for a hunting rifle, made only in 1940!! the 99E in 300 will probably be the easiest 20" barrel rifle to find. Don

Find a 99F in 300 with a recoil pad (tons of those around, so cheap).. remove the recoil pad and you've just lost most of your 2" of length.

If anybody needs 1, I have a 20" 300 Savage barrel that I took off a 99E. It would be fine used as is, or it would make a fine candidate for reboring/rechambering to 338 Federal.
$100 shipped.

How about an H carbine or barrel band carbine in 30-30?
Now there is a hog gun.

Okay, so A,E or maybe H for the 20" barrel, and the E would be the easiest to find?
The idea of cutting off the recoil pad would certainly reduce some overall length, but then I'd have a rifle with no recoil pad. I like recoil pads on my rifles :p
The .30-30 is surely and excellent cartridge for hogs, and I've considered it, but I need to be able to reach out to about 250 yards on occasion and from what I hear that's seriously pushing the range limits of the .30-30 even with LeverEvolution ammo. I think I'd be better off with the .300 Savage.

Really...?
I guess it could be done, but a 300 Savage with a 20" barrel doesn't make my top 20 list to take a 250 yard shot.

Longer barrels only add more velocity. And 2" more isn't going to add that much more. A 130gr or 150gr out of a 20" barrel will do just fine at 250 yards.

I think it would get the job done fine as well. I could go with a .308 but I think the .300 savage will kill a deer just as well at that distance and do it with a little less recoil.

Just find any beater M99 in .300 Sav/.308 Win and wack the barrel off to 20 inches if that's what floats your boat. Once the barrel is shortened ya only gotta have one hole drilled to mount a ramp for a front sight. If ya use a scope ya don't even need that.
