I have made several shots on bedded animals before that were beyond what the general public would consider as typical distances. Also, as Jeff and maybe others mentioned, that animal behavior if fairly predictable. Practicing beyond the distances you intend to shoot and shooting in terrible conditions, will help you realize where you are at at certain distances and conditions. This year for the first time I used the "Spotter Shot" principle, as I knew I couldn't dope the wind as good as I would like (same distance, but about 20-25 yards to the right of the animal). The animal remained calm and the meat is now ground up into burger in my freezer-I try to make a habit to not eat entrails, hair, bone & hide This was my longest LR animal ever. Once you have your drops field proven again and again, the wind is the real issue at hand. I do have a big 338 coming. It will be interesting to see how it works compared to the 7mm Dakota-I can't wait!

XP Hunter: Make sure that I have this correctly, you spot-shot, were able to see the spotter shot hole (hole in what?), corrected 20-25 imprecise feet for the wind, the wind waited, did not change and you made the shot? What were you using for a scope, the Palomar Observatory? How far away was this animal to need a 20-25 foot wind correction, London England? What did you use as a rangefinder? Most only go to 600-900 yards. You need an ICBM, not a "big .338 rifle".

Old trader,
I think you misread his post. He shot off to the side 20-25 yds away from intended animal not a wind drift of 25-30 yards.
I have a Leica Geovid 10 x 42 that ranged DIRT at 1401 yds last week. It easily ranges animals off a tripod out to 900 yds.

OT, If you were being sarcastic-That was funny If you were being serious-I am sorry for not explaining myself better. AZShooter, Thanks for the clarification. Actually, I had a friend spotting for me with a tri-pod mounted spotting scope. I had another tri-pod that had the Swarovski LRF mounted on it. I used a prairie dog mound that was to the right of the lope (it was the same distance to the lope but to the right), to determine how close to spot on my original dope was.

Sarcastic it was. Longest shot I ever made was 450 ft on an elk with my 7mm Rem 700.

My response was for oldtrader (OT), not you. But as long as you are having fun... All of my hunting this year has been in Wyoming.

Is it hard to hang on to as it launches? No, from what I have been told Kirby still has it, since the wind has not calmed down for over 2 weeks, and he wants to do some LR accuracy testing. Kirby did do some chronographing though and got a sense of the recoil. Here is the rest of the story, if you are so inclined: http://www.longrangehunting.com/forums/f29/aps-big-boy-49233/
