I load for an 1873 and a saa reproduction. Got my best results with starline brass, wlp primer,11 gr. 2400 with 16 gr. cream of wheat on top, and a 200 gr.laser cast bullet. 1050 fps in the rifle and 850 fps. in the pistol.

I have used 8.0 grains of Unique with 200 grain cast bullets in Winchester cases in an original Winchester 1892.
Case life has been good, accuracy great at 50 to 100 yards.
Campfire member 30WCF and others gave me great input on cast bullet selection and sizing die issues recently.
You can do a search.
Reloading the .44-40 is not rocket science, but it is a bit more involved than similar cartridges. It is worth the effort.

30, do you have any idea what your speeds are running on that load? Out of the handgun, I mean. Just wonderin'.
