Meant to put this in the "Big Bore Levers" forum, but it's here now . . .
Managed to shoot a whitetail last Sunday afternoon late. Not a big one, it was a first year button buck, but big for its age (maybe 7 months?) - it weighed 125# on the hoof before being dressed. I am surprised and impressed every time by the knockdown power of the 45-70 round - without beating you up. I have now taken 7 or 8 WT's with various 45-70's and they have all been "one and down", whether with the 1895 or my single shots. If you don't have one, ya gotta try one.
Someday I hope to be the person my dogs think I am . . . The only true cost of having a dog is its death. Someone once said "a nation of sheep will beget a government of wolves." Shiloh Sharps . . . there is no substitute. NRA Endowment Member

Agreed. I have killed a nice buck and two big does this season so far, and all have been bang-flop kills. All with a ghost ring-sighted Marlin Guide Gun, at ranges from 15 to 75 yds. The buck and the first doe went down in less than a minute total, as the buck was chasing the doe when I dropped him, and she stopped to see what happened. Bad move on her part. I am absolutely in love with the cartridge, and only slight less crazy about the rifle. I have never seen a better combo for the second-growth oak and brushy ravines where I hunt. Am using the 405gr. Remington trapdoor loads for now, until I get my bullet mold and more brass. Very little expansion on whitetails, but an instant kill and almost no meat destruction. Anybody who hunts close needs to try this caliber.
