Not official, but I am betting it is
.223
30-06
308
243
270
7 mag
30-30

In terms of quantity, .223 wins by a landslide because of all the AR-15 type weapons.

Not sure, but would figure:
.223
.243
.270
.30-06
.30-30

The .30-30 isn't sexy, but keeps on going.

For big game it used to be;

.30-30
.30/06
.270 Win
.243 Win
.308 Win

Once read an article the 5 most reloaded cartridges;

.30/06
.223 Rem
.38 special
.357 mangle-um
.44 mangle-um

Would bet that a 9mm is in there somewheres nowdays.

Ammo sales? According to the local Wallymart its something like;

1. .22LR
2. 9mm
3. .40 S&W
4. .45 ACP
5. .38 Spec

Interesting - I would have thought that maybe the 300wsm would have made it into the top 5......it seems to be very popular.

"Top 5 best selling cals in the U.S."

Are we talking new rifles or are we talking ammunition?

The difference is that cartridges like the 30-30 still sell a lot of ammunition because of the rifles sold previously over many years,,but 30-30 rifles are very slow sellers in many areas.

I'm talking long rifle rounds here;
If you want my opinion on best pistol round, it's the 38 super;
got one from R.I A., and I will bet you that you cant find a better round out of an auto; faster than a 357, flatter than a 45, and more penetration than a 9mm;

Of course, I am discounting all the .22 RIMFIRE ammo, and below, cause they ar not legal to hunt game with;
I have a .17HMR that we shoot golf balls out of trees at 100-150 yds. with;
That's not big game hunting:

I have hunted in Alaska, Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado,Utah, New Mexico,Arizona, Texas, Arkansas, Missouri
I will take my 3 guns, and have good hunting;
My Favorite: my trusty 30-06:
WHY?

BC (ballistics coefficient): I'm not going into this here, but when you get it, you'll know why
