I'm looking to purchase a 1874 Sharp's in .45-70. I was wondering if anybodoy had any info about the two major makers of the rifle. I've fired a Pedersoli and have seen and examined a Armi. They both seem like excellent rifles. Any help would be much appreciated..

The Pedersoli is hands down the better rifle. The Pedersolis regularly are competitive in silhouette, I've never heard of an Armi doing well.

Shiloh makes the best Sharps, in my opinion.

Howdy,
I agree to Sharpshooter 100 %. Im from Germany and we are shooting the Pedersoli like the "butter and bred rifle", because its a very good price/quality solution.
At the top of the rankinglists you will find Browning, Shiloh and lots of Pedersolirifles, but nearly zero Armi Sports.

Best wishes

Sharpshooter, Glad to hear you like the Shiloh's. Mine is supposed to ship this week. After waiting a year, I am anxious to see it. TM

I've got two Shilohs now. A 40-70ss that I hunt with and a 45-100 that I shoot silhouettes with. I've got a new #3 on the Shiloh production floor right now, its about to go out to Ken Hurst for engraving. It will be my new 40-70ss hunting rifle. They are some of the best rifles I have ever seen.

Thanks for the input from everybody. I'm glad to see the shooting sports are alive and well Germany! I have shot a Pedersoli and was very impressed. In fact it is the reason I have to buy a Sharp's. I was hoping somebody would say the Armi was good because I found one at a good deal. But, I will wait and save my pennies for the Pedersoli. Thanks again!!!

I picked up a taylors sharps made by Armi a while back. I haven't done alot of shooting with it so far, but what I have done I'm real pleased with it.

I'm a virgin when it comes to BPCR shooting and don't know much about the sport other than it is expensive. Because of this, I don't want to buy 2 rifles because the first one I buy doesn't pass muster. A friend in my pistol club let me shoot his Pedersoli Sharp's and I loved it. I was giggling like a child everytime I tripped those double triggers. I'm hooked.

cowchip,

I tried posting this awhile back, but it must not have made it. I got pretty serious about BPCR shooting a couple of years ago, and hang out on the BPCR boards, shoot competition, and have talked with gunsmiths. The consensus seems to be that Pedersoli makes fine guns, and they are the best of the Italian reproductions. In terms of accuracy, they are probably the equal of Shilohs and other USA made semi-custom BPCRs, but not quite up to their fit and finish. Dick Trenk, P's national sales representative has posted in great detail about the pains P goes to make good barrels, obviously the heart of a rifle's accuracy. Be aware that Pedersoli is a large company, and makes rifles to specs for different importers. To some extent you get what you pay for, and some models have pretty junky sights. OTOH, P makes some very good sights, but you'll pay more for them. Many if not most serious BPCR shooters aspire to a Shiloh, but if you can't afford one or just don't want to spend the $$, I wouldn't hesitate to go with a Pedersoli.

The way I figured it was I'ld spend what finances would allow for my Sharps copy. If I tried the sport and liked it ,I could either upgrade the sights, or sell my rifle and put that money towards a higher grade .

Hold the phone boys and girls, I just saw a STAINLESS STEEL Sharps action on a Pedersoli rifle! It looked awful nice. Not quite Shiloh fit and finish, but pretty good work none-the-less. I nearly bought it.

WE WERE SHOOTING MY RELOADS WHICH WERE 41.4 GR. OF IMR 4198 AND A 300 GR. HOLLOW PT. REMINGTON BULLET. I HAVE SHOT HOGS AT 300 TO 450 YARDS WITH NO TROUBLE. I HAVE NO COMPLAINTS. USRANGER

Cowchip,
FWIW, I have only been shooting BPCR for three years, but have done pretty well with Pedersoli's (going to a World Championship in South Africa in 3 weeks with one). You made the comment that you only wanted to buy one rifle & keep it affordable. Echoing what others have said, I think that for another $100 or two for a Pedersoli is a better choice. Not to say that you probably would have a lot of good shooting with an Armi- just shooting these things gladens the heart!! .....good luck, Dennis

Depends on if you want it to go bang or shoot. Pedersoli is the best of the imports for the money hard to beat and very competitive against all even Shiloh. But not as refined as the U.S. made copies. I know people that have Pedersoli's, Shiloh, Axtell , and C Sharps. I have shot all of them and I like them all. I'm waiting for my Pedersoli 40-65 silhouette due in next week. I have others but this is my first Pedersoli.
Parts are another thing they all break in time if you shoot alot.
Check parts availibility and prices what a difference. If it were me and money was the question Pedersoli no doubt John Bodine Roller first and then a second choice would be a 1874 sharps both have a pistol grip and double set triggers an advantage in my opinion and in 45-70 30" barrels and you can shoot in any event in the country and buy good sights not imports. Browning Bpcr's are excelent rifles also and the sights are top notch. Hope this helps.
