I have a soon to be 10 year old daughter that I have been trying to think of a good rifle to buy her for deer hunting. I already own a M99 in 300 and lastnight my buddy said I might want to think about getting her a 250. I'm worried about recoil but want to keep the gun .25 cal or above. I've never shot a 250 and would like your opinions on whether this rifle would work for her or not. I've been thinking about a featherweight model. She already shoots a 22lr and is pretty good with it. But if I need to wait another year for her to get alittle bigger I will.
Thanks, Woolly

Recoil from a .250 should be very doable for her. My concern would be whether or not she would be comfortable with the lever action. I have a boatload of 99's, yet my wife shoots a bolt gun.

I just bought a Henry 22lr lever action for her and she loves it. In fact, she picked it out herself. Its still alittle long for her but she does pretty good with it.

WoollyB, (flyfisher by chance?)
Anyway, my girl is 10 as well and she shoots a T/C contender carbine in 7X30 Waters and doesn't have a problem with recoil. I do load her some slightly lighter loads though. I'm thinking that the 250 should be somewhat comparable? (I'm sure some one will jump on me if it isn't )

Then by all means, go for it. The .250 shouldn't bother her at all. Congratulations in having a daughter that has such interest.

My daughter was never much for hunting till the rabbits started eating her flowers. Actually it's more like WAR!

I'll add my 2 cents, It's great see a family enjoyinr hunting and shooting sports. You may want to think about a .243 for your daughter. I have taken Texas Hill Country bucks the last 2 seasons with my 99's in .243. Good Luck.

I tell you what I have told all the other boys that used to come and see my older daughters. "I have lots of guns." There is nothing like cleaning your 44Mag in the family room when a hopeful boyfriend comes over. I told this one she couldn't date until she turns 26. I also have a 4 year old that I taught how to count with while we were cleaning brass. I'm afraid she is going to be a hellraiser. And she is already asking for a gun.

Do what I did, just don't potty train them.

My 9 year old is potty trained, but her favorite rifle is a Bushmaster AR shortie with a holograph C-more sight. Once she ran a few clips through that rascal, her Stevens Favorite seemed a little tame. She may not need my help to scare the boys off

Mine has been eyeballing my new .357 GP100. Asked me if I could load some bullets so she could shoot it. Anyone put your kids in the 4H shooting courses? I've been thinking seeing if my daughter would like to join next year. She is really safe with a gun. In fact I trust her more when we goto the range than I do alot of the dumb@#$$% that show up. But I figured it would do her some good to learn different methods from other people too.
