Congrats! Isn't it "funny" .....just when you think NOTHING can be better than killing one yourself; you THEN take one of YOUR children and they score....and you find NOTHING compares????
Last year I took a former student(his mom works at my school) to my deer camp in Georgia. Even after lots of long talks about what size buck was allowed, my guest shot a "peanut" 6 point.
I saw the same buck as it came by my stand knowing it would come close to the tower stand my charge was in. I cringed when I heard the shot, but knew that on our place anything can happen.
When I went to fetch him, he described the same small buck, but I only wanted to find the deer. He was very excited, but had marked the place where the deer had been struck. We found the buck about ten yards away and it was as small as I had thought. As I was about to chew him out, I looked at his face. He was all "shakes" and asked if he could drag him out alone.
I felt about 1 inch tall, and said "Of course you can".
I had the honor of being there when a young hunter took his 1st buck. I will always remember that day(and all the chatter afterwards)
When my son started deer hunting it added something extra special to my hunt, just watching his excitement and desire to learn more. He went with me a few times before he was old enough to carry a gun, remaining still and quiet as a mouse, never once complaining about the early morning cold. His first buck was a small, basket rack 8pt., a trophy that I had mounted for him. Opening day two yrs. latter he passed up a shot at a similar sized buck saying he wanted to hold out for a more mature one, his decision completely. About 30min. passes and we spot another buck, a real nice one this time. He drops it with our .270 we go check it out, It's a 8pt. w/18"+ inside spread and perfect symmetry, weighed about 150-160lbs. field dressed, not a monster but still a very nice deer. His buck had the biggest rack checked in at the check station in our small town that opening weekend (1994). A crowd of hunters gathered around the son's buck at the check station, offering him slaps on the back, high fives, congrats. Other hunters were stopping by the house just to get a look and asking him questions, me watching him all the while feeling a fathers pride. Since deer opener was a big event in our small town back then, he was a local celebrity for a few days, always a good thing for a young mans ego. (and a proud fathers ego too) .......joken2
You got something to brag about Tom. Yeah, it is good when your kids take intrest in your sport and take it up. Went through it about fifteen years ago with my boys.
As usual when they first started they were blood thirsty little heathens as are most kids. Then, in a season or two settled down and became choosy.
It is a special feeling when you watch a bunch of grown men surround your kid when he brings in a good one. Boy won a rifle in a local big buck contest with an 11 point 19 incher. Old Dad was proud of him.
Brother noticed that too.... ....she also spends more time on our shooting range also...pays off me thinks...but you know she gave him crap cuz she scored first so he gave her crap cuz he got a buck then she game him crap cuz hers fell 2 feet from the 2 track (no draggin) then he gave her crap cuz he hit his at a longer range then she gave him....ect. ect. ect.... and I got 7 kids too.
Congrats!! I can second that brag. I love the youth hunts here in Iowa. Too warm ususally, but that's the only down side. It's more fun to take my son than going myself. I give him the choice to shoot or wait. Last year he shot a nice doe the evening of the first day. He had taken off from a football game and did not want to miss others, so he took her. This year all we saw were does but he just wanted to watch them. We never took a deer and only made it out twice but both times were great and are etched in my memory. I don't know how a lout like me could have raised such a great kid. He makes me proud in all he does! The really great thing is that I have two younger daughters who want to hunt too. I may be able to get out for youth season for the next ten years! I'm gonna have to get a bigger blind!
We may know the time Ben Carson lied, but does anyone know the time Hillary Clinton told the truth?
Immersing oneself in progressive lieberalism is no different than bathing in the sewage of Hell.
Congrats!! Sounds like things are looking up for the up coming deer hunters. My boy shot his first deer with my 30-06 Rem. at 9 pointer. 7 yr.old at the time. He's took a doe at 110 Yards and a buck with my smoke pole. Now he wanting something mature.
