Can you help me id this gun? I ran across a nice blued 700 in .260 and got all excited - only to find that it was a short stock. Figured it was actually a Model 7, but no - the receiver is labeled as a 700. Dark forend cap on the wood stock which looks like a 700 Mountain Rifle. Shorter pull by an inch or so versus a standard 700 and a factory recoil pad. Barrel is light contour. Detachable mag. The more I look at it, its pretty much a perfect match for the 700 Mountain DM - with the exception of the length of pull.

What do you think it actually is? Sure looks like this....

Maybe somebody cut the stock down and used a factory pad?

The more research I've done, the more I think that's the case. But I originally couldn't even find the model from the link. Thought you guys might know better than me if there was some other model out there.

Don't know if the sales price would justify replacing it with a new factory stock. What would be a good aftermarket model for a light gun like this? Maybe a takeoff?

I know that I have a 700 DM MR walnut stock around somewhere that I will be happy to sell you for what I have into it, plus the actual shipping & insurance.

If it wears the factory DM metal, the action has no internal feed rails and must be fed by a DM system, so keep that in mind when looking for stocks. It may be a deal-breaker for some....

Sounds like a youth model. If it is used, the previous owner probably paid a premium to get it special ordered. Try it a couple of time and unless you really angst over it, you probably won't even notice the difference. You could have a smith (or diy) put a half inch or so spacer between the butt plate and the stock if it does bother you.
I had a model 7 with a cadet stock (youth) on it for my son that I used every so often because the smaller stock made it very nimble.

AFAIK, Remington never cataloged the 700 DM MR in a youth style, so it is much more likely to be a standard 700 DM MR that has been cut-down. A person ought to be able to get into any 700 DM style for 60% of the cost of a comperable 700 BDL format, since the DM format is anything but popular.

I've inherited two rifles that had the stocks cut down to around a 12.5" LOP. I use them for hunting in the deep cold when the amount of clothing makes shouldering a full size stock difficult.

I might be wrong, but it seems to me that Remington offered
the 260 in the 700ADL youth synthetic.

I use my wife's Model 7 youth in 260 all the time. I found out that the shorter stock and overall length to be pretty darned handy.
