Ended up with a Primos "original wench" call & DVD for $20 @ Gander Mountain. The slection of calls there is not very good but its all I have locally. Really wanted a Duck Commander call but they didnt have the one I wanted. Been practicing daily and will be going out with it in a couple weeks. Thanks for you help everyone.

Pullit, Your calls are beautiful.

You are right about what a small of wood removed can do to change the sound of a call. You probably know this, but if the reed is where you want it and the call is a little too high pitched, then barely file a little wood off toward the cork. For higher pitch move toward the end with the file. I used to watch Butch Richenback (now RNT) make calls. It was amazing to see how quick he could cut out and tune an end piece; only a few minutes.

If you are talking "old school" that's the old style Olt with the thick cork and keyhole endpiece. I used to modify the sound boards on them for myself and friends. I cannot find a more raspy and ducky sounding call if they turn out right.

But for anyone starting out, I always recommend trying the Haydel DR-85. They are cheap, easy to blow, and a very good call in the hands of an expert. Brimfish

Butch made me a call back about 1981/82 and it sounded GREAT. I lost the stopper out of it and had him male me another one. It sounded nothing like the first one.

Thanks for the heads up on tuning. I am still learning and most of what I do is trail and error. It is nice to have an idea of where to start cutting.

Primos calls are good for sure. If there is a park or lake near by, I used to take a recorder and record live ducks then go home and try to sound like them. Real ducks are what you want to sound like.
Good luck and let us know how your do.

Be sure and get an instructional DVD-or-CD + call combo package for starting out. Gives you all the instruction that you need to get started sounding like a duck.

Learn to call, listen to live ducks, pick up tips from other successful callers that you hunt with, and above all else - Do Not Call Ducks That Are Coming In - Call them on the corners and when they are flying away from you.

The Quackhead call is an inexpensive plastic/acrylic call that will make duck-like sounds. $20 @ Bass Pro Shops.

You can't go wrong with Duck Commander or Haydel's DR-85.. Both great calls and have put more ducks in the pot then 90% of the other calls... So if they are "beginner" calls that is just fine...
