Several years back I bought a 700 Classic in .250, then a Ruger M77 .250, then a 6mm 700ADL to have built into a .250AI. Sold the first two, then bought an FN .250 and a M77UL .250 which also got sold. There can be only one (maybe two, a Model 20), a M99, and I've had an eye out for one for some time now.
Well, not a .250 but I have a 99EG in .300 Savage. Looks like they're the belly-button of 99's, everyone's got one, but it's confirmed for me that I like the rifles! This one shoots well so far, I bought 5 boxes of 150 CoreLokts from a shop back in PA that had grandfathered its supply of ammo when it all went nuts last year. Also ponied up the big bucks for a box of Winchester PP's and a box of Federal 150's. The gun zeroed quick and I'm in the process of shooting a cold-barrel group over the course of 5 trips to the range. So far the first 2 are .80" apart, now that it's cold we'll see if it holds up.
Don't really need another deer rifle, the .250AI is all I guess I really need, but the rifle is too real not to take out. It all comes down to triggers for me, so far this one is good at the bench and if it's still sweet at offhand/sitting sling shots on the 200m gongs it's a keeper (or trade fodder for a .250).
What I'd like to know is did they put swivels on these rifles from the factory? I'm guessing no, but gotta ask. The S/N is 739xxx and it's factory D/T (Savage 99 on the side of the front mount area). Can't definitively make out the YOM stamping on the lever boss. Steel buttplate. Nice walnut. Weaver mounts, and I swiped the scope/Burris signature rings from my M788.
Also, this one came without a rear sight so I'd like to ask what would be proper for that generation/model? I'm guessing a buckhorn style with a stepped ramp to raise/lower impact, or maybe a leaf or two. Not that I'd be using them, if I go scopeless I'll buy a tang sight.
Thanks for any help!
