I an new to custom builds and was thinking about purchasing a used 700 in 30-06 and changing it ti 338-06. Can somebody point me in the right direction as far as cost and what is required. A 338-06 sitting in an edge would be the perfect rig for most anything in North America.

Cost would be dependent on what barrel make you want and what smith does the work. $518 for an Edge stock, on this site now, blinking to my right as I type. Factory trigger or aftermarket? There are several gunsmiths on this site, PM one of them for a quote. Know what you want done or ask for their advice.Rick.

Thank you for the input. What are some good barrels to look at? I probably would go with a Timney trigger.

Lilja, PacNor, Shilen, Krieger, Hart, there are more. I would discuss the barrel choice with the smith you choose. The ones I have worked with usually had a favorite brand.

For good tubes, I'd take a look at Schneider, Channnlyn (that's what my 338/06 is), Lilja, Hart, Krieger and Bartlein.
The other option to an Edge would be to find a Ti take off and use it. It'd be a lot cheaper, only a couple of ounces heavier and a lot quicker to get.
Just a thought.

I think I will start watching the classified for a donor 30-06. I don't know much about barrels, but really like the Krieger on my Weatherby .270.

Does the Remington 700 SPS have the same action as the higher end 700's?

I can pickup a NIB SP 30-06 from my buddy for $450. That sounds like a good starting point.

If your "smith" doesn't have a Reamer I'll have one for sale, one time used, here in a few months. I'm having a 338-06 A-Square built and I purchased the reamer new from Manson's. Just a thought as it would save you a few dollars along the way.
I'd also add that you might look at recoil calculations and decide if a really lite stock is what you want.
Standard load using a 210 gr. bullet at max charge should yield the following numbers:
6.25 lb gun all up: 33.78 ft/lbs recoil 6.5 lb gun all up: 32.48 ft/lbs recoil 7.25 lb gun all up: 29.12 ft/lbs recoil 8 lb gun all up: 26.39 ft/lbs recoil
(compare to say a 300 Wby Mag in a 9lb gun: 28.07 ft/lbs recoil)

Send your rifle to ER Shaw , they will do you a good job and they guarantee there work and it won't cost you down payment on a house. http://www.ershawbarrels.com/

The M-700 is a good starting point. The long box adds capacity, you only need a couple of grains extra to make effect use of the 4350 class. One of the guys at the range did one on a SPS.

I'd strongly recommend Mike Rock's barrels for consideration. I'm running one of Mike's on my 340 wby with a 9.4 twist and it is fantastic.

I would check the local pawn shops for a Remington action. The pawn shop by my work is selling a Remington ADL in 270 for $240.

Definitely consider the Lilja #2. That'd be my choice. Just my 2 cents. http://www.riflebarrels.com/

I'm not you but I don't see anything wrong with the OLE TRUSTY 30-06. Nothing wrong with the 30-06. I already have a Browning X-Bolt and just want something different. Variety is the spice of life.............

Thank you for all of the great input. I think this would be a great first build. As far as recoil is concerned, I am not too concerned. I shot a Weatherby Ultra-Light in 300 Win and it was harsh, but manageable. I would like to see the rifle tip the scales at around 7lbs before scope, rings and mounts. Should I go with the BDL or ADL version of the SPS?
