Do these guns with the 16.5 inch barrells shoot well. I have virtually no experience with barrell lengths less tan 20 inches. I went to the gun shop today and told my buddy that works there about a gun i had for sell that i bought at a flee market years ago for 150 dollars. It was a norinco mak 90 that i never shoot I traded it nearly even for a NIB ruger m77 compact .260 remington plan on using it strictly for a truck gun coyotes and the occasional deer. The gun had a milled receiver and my buddy told me he could sell it for a goo profit but I was satisfied thinking i was trading up epecially considering what i had in it and never used it.

Jcdixon.............Yes they do shoot very well!

My 300 WSM Ruger Frontier shoots extremely well, while duplicating 26" tubed 30-06 AI ballistics from its shorty 16.5" barrel. With my most accurate reloads, I get MOA and less.

Yes! They are louder, but I wear good hearing protection when hunting too. Regardless of its smaller size, mine is powerful enough for anything on the N/A continent.

As mine is, your compact 260 will be louder than a longer barreled 260. However, the shorter tube will not detract from any accuracy. You`ll lose a few percentage points in total velocity which won`t make any killing difference on any animal you can hunt with a 260.

If you reload, and as with all of us who do, you`ll need to find the powders, bullets, seating depths etc, which work the best in your particular rifle.

If you do that and find which loads work best in your Ruger compact, you`ll be very pleased. In a bolt action and because of its smaller size, there is no better a truck gun, no better a rifle for handling, for quick shouldering, and no better a rifle to easily manuver as a Ruger compact. I`ve handled `em all!

They are ALOT of fun to hunt with.

Happy hunting!

I bought the same rifle last spring. I really like it. On my rifle, and my other Rugers, a $35 trigger job at the gunsmiths helps. I also mount and then lap the scope rings with the lapping kit from Sinclairs. Here is my (wordy) right up on mine. It says I like it.

I've got two Ruger LSS Compacts. One in 7mm-08 and the other in .223

They will both shoot under 1" for 5 shots at 100 yards with loads they like.

These are great handeling guns.
I like this stock so well that I bought one for my Ruger .204 UltraLight.(20" barrel)

They make a great truck gun!

I had a 6x42mm Leupold on one of mine but change it out for a 6x36mm Leupold. It just "looks" better on the small gun.

All things being equal the short barrel should be more accurate because it is stiffer. You're going to loose some velocity but IMO it's worth it for the handiness you gain. Have looked at them just never got around to owning one. I do have a Remington Model 7 in 260 with the 18 1/2" barrel, I guess that's my compact rifle for now.

My .223 was a great shooter, well under an inch.

It was also a joy to carry around.

I ended up selling it because I didn't like the balance and the

muzzle blast was more than I could stand. It just wasn't

practical to use ear protection for every shot with a walking

around varmint rifle.
