Here's a target from my first real test of the sharps. The load was a Cheyenne cast 494 gr spitzer sized .458. Walters .30 wad, 65grs goex 2f, winchester cases, and winchester large rifle primers.

ok i know wyoming isn't in australia. ( target upside down tho so that give me the option of being serious or goofy.) tell us about the sharps. what calibre? from the powder weight must be a 45/70 or a 40/65. been working with a 45/110 ... been told they're not as accurate as either , but it's a hoot to play with and probably more accurate than i am.
Yes the target is upside down. No Wy isn't in Australia, but I did spend a couple of days in Victoria Bc this summer maybe that explains the problem. (lol) Its a 45-70. Seems to be shooting good groups but until I get that front sight filed off enough to suit me won't know for sure. I've not had any experience with the 110, but I have shot a 120 that was a real tac driver with 500 gr paper patched bullets.

Last time, I never really saw much far enough away to need a scoped rifle. I'll probably bring either the .243 or the .270, but I may also bring the .25/35, just for fun.
Jim I'm thinking on the 405 (surprise surprise) and maybe just the plain ol dirty thirty, or maybe the ackley. So many guns so many choices. Althought the 99 in 308 hasn't shotanything for a while either. Waiting for a phone call from that gal about the duck blind. Been shuffling cows and stuff so haven't been in the house much. Did see that buck that the widder Brown was talking about, we should of spent a little more time in search of him.

Don- The blind in NE went for $2k. Some PFC got it, said he was willing to go $2500 if neccessary. Troy ran it to $1800, but quit, and I'm glad cause I said I'd go half. We were thinking it was worth $1000-$1200. Anyway gotta run, making my last trip to Wheatland for the G&F today.
Whew that's abunch of money to shoot a couple of ducks. Still no word from Caroline yet. We may have to jump shoot ducks off of Muskrat till it freezes over.

Compression is important to shooting good groups in BPCR competitions. Along with that is OAL, bullet lube and proper blow tubing. The objective should be to achieve 1 moa at each distance. The 45-70 in my experience over the past 3 years is that it likes the 540 grain bullet of the creedmoor design. Testing at 2-300 yards is important as these are the distances you will be shooting There is one more thing that you should consider. Primers make an enormous difference in group size. Large pistol primers should be tested as well as magnum LR primers. Just changing the primer and leaving everything else the same might surprise you.
Trigger time and lots of careful records will help you achieve your goal.
I haven't had time to shoot the next batch of loads I have loaded with the .459 bullets yet so I can't say if they group better or not. I've already tried cci and ww primers the edge so far goes with the ww's. I was actually pretty impressed with the groups I was getting on the target I posted here as that target represents a little over 20 rounds fired in 3 shot groups with me taking a file to the front sight trying to get it to shoot where I wanted it too. As soon as I get it where I want it at 100 then I plan to start shooting on out to as far as I can see. If I can get to it before the cows come home to start calving I can shoot out to over 1000 yds just west of my house. Thanks for the tips.

it's all my fault for being goofy. talking about your 45/70 i just picked up a danish remington rolling block in 11.7x51r which is pretty much a shorter 45/70. just loaded up a wack of ammo for sunday to put it thru its paces. nice old rifle. made in 1878 and the bore is really clean. it has the highest sight i have ever seen on a rifle 3"+. might even be able to reach the rams but don't know if it'll knock them off with only 60 grains of powder behind a 450 grain bullet. i'll let you know.
