We are scheduled for an over night stay in Seattle on the 1st of Jan then fly back here on the 2nd. Does the airline keep our luggage and put it on the next days flight or do we have to get our bags and check them in again at Seatac on Saturday?

If I remember correctly, airlines will hang on to your luggage if the layover is less than 12 hours.
You might also want to see if you get to pay the lugagge fee twice, if any.

if the bags are checked through to your destination they stay with the airline.

Unless you're coming in from another country, then you'll have to pick your bags up at customs, then recheck em.

I did an 18 hour or so layover in ANC this summer. Alaska Airlines would not check my bags all the way through from ADQ to SMF, as there was a date change during the 18 hour stretch (I left ANC about 1:00 AM).

However, by talking with the ticket agent in ADQ, I was able to get Alaskan to only charge for baggage for one leg. If they had not, it wouldn't have been cheap, as I had three bags.

I don't know if this makes a difference or not but we are flying first class from Anchorage to Boston round trip and the tickets were bought months ago.

Don't worry, more than likely your flight will be delayed so long that you won't have time to stay at the hotel. Just kidding, kinda wink
