Excluding the different kinds of ammo that can be shot in each, if you were down to just one handgun, what would it be and a reason why.

Revolver for me because simply put, I'm just not good with an auto. My hands seem like they are built for a revolver grip. Preferably a single action grip. Sure, I shoot autos every now and then, but for me, my choice will always be a revolver over an auto.

Revolver for me - fewer moving parts and more tolerant of abuse. My one choice would be a single action 44 Mag - for the variety of loads available and the durability. Probably something like a 4-5/8" stainless blackhawk...

Of the few handguns I own (CZ85 Combat-9mm, Ruger Redhawk-357mag, CZ52-7.62x25) I would have to go with my CZ85 Combat for the sole purpose that it is comfortable to hold & shoot. It's accurate, and doesnt weight a ton.
Otherwise, i would go with a revolver, but my Ruger Redhawk in 357 is a brick! The CZ52 i never wanted, but my dad insisted i take it.
If i were to make a choice of any one handgun to own, i would go with a Revolver...probably a Ruger GP100 series, 6" stainless, 357 mag. Like tominboise said "fewer moving parts and more tolerant of abuse"
The Ruger GP is not the prettiest revolver out there, but in my opinion one of the most durable. I had one that i traded off for my redhawk. I don't regret that choice, but i now feel the need to go out and get another GP...

A revolver in a serious caliber.
Love autos, but in addition to self defense, there is always hunting. A good revolver points like a laser.

It would be a toss up between a Government Model .45 ACP automatic and a Smith & Wesson K-Frame .357 Magnum revolver. If forced to pick only one, I'd flip a coin, but might come down slightly on the side of the revolver before resorting to that.

S&W K-frame .357 Mag, most likely a 4" Model 19. The K-frame is the perfect size and weight for a very versatile cartridge, and that size and weight accommodates everything from IWB to open carry. If that's not enough, the Model 19 is also one of the most elegant revolvers ever created.

Another vote for a 4" K-Frame... I too love the M19 but use a bit more pragmatic M66..... Also veddy much like the M15 and M67s in .38 spl. Guess the pic says it all...when 2 out of 3 in the house are K-Frame Smiths... Ingwe

Semi-auto here...and if limited to "just one" it would be a 1911 in .38 Super....either a Combat Commander or Government Model.
But besides being just a .38 Super, with a simple barrel change it becomes a cheap to shoot 9mm or a 9x23 with full .357 Magnum ballistics. Add to that an ACE .22 Conversion Unit and one has cheap combat practice or a .22 Marvel unit that makes the gun into a .22 Match gun..
Then if you want to get even more versatility one can with a slide/ejector switch have the whole range of .45 ACP cartridges... .45 Super... .400 CorBon...

If for self defence, then I'd pick my 1911 in 45 ACP. Why, because it holds more rounds and it is accurate and effective. If we are talking about hunting and self defence then I's pick a 45 Colt. Why, because it can be loaded to handle either situation perfectly

For what purpose is the 1 handgun to be used for? You guys just can't do it, can you? One all-purpose handgun, no conversion kits, bonus slides, or rifles with a handgun hidden in the stock. In the future, if we are picking one all-purpose vehicle you can't choose a truck towing a boat.

Revolver here. You do away with all the feeding problems that can be inherent to semis.Especially the std 1911 Govt 1911. I don't want to have to worry about which bullet I fire in a handgun for fear it won't feed.
I have a few semis and more than a few revolvers. The 686 goes to the range if I want to do some serious shooting.A Ruger Security Six, .357 goes with me if I am in the saddle and not hunting. A Ruger Blackhawk ,4 5/8 in 44 mag if I am riding and hunting and not carrying a rifle. A K-22 goes to the range if I need to restore shooting techniques. A Smith 2" snubby in.357 gets the ccw job.
If God wanted you to walk and carry things on your back, He would not have invented stirrups and pack saddles
