Saw a 99F at the Big Buck gun shop in Wexford PA this week and along with a new forearm the rifle wore a Redfield peep sight. Guess you'd call it a receiver sight, looked like it was mounted via the tang screw holes. However, it looked like the holes were spaced closer together than those on my 1950's 99EG.

Was there a difference in that spacing or was I just mis-remembering how mine looked? I'd like to get one of those Redfields eventually, it was a pretty precise looking instrument.

kgb41, it depends on what you were seeing. Your 1950's 99EG is very likely not factory drilled for a scope? If not, it just has the tang sight holes way at the back of the receiver.

The 99F's were all factory d&t for a scope. The 1950's 99F's had both the tang holes like yours, and the scope mount holes up front. The 99F's from 1960 on didn't have the tang holes, they only had the d&t holes for scopes.

So... the 99F sounds as though it was wearing a Redfield sight that mounted into the tang holes, and those holes have the same spacing as your EG.

Or... the 99F could have had a Redfield receiver sight that mounted into the scope holes. And that would be different than your EG.

Thanks, guys, mine is factory D&T and I've been shooting it scoped so far. When I removed the Weaver rings that came on it and substituted some Burris rings I noticed the gun felt like it'd be sweet if just using open sights or a peep. I didn't have it along or have any other 99 to compare with the F model I was looking at in the store.

There had been a clip-fed 99 at Gun World in Harrisville back in early November but I didn't check that one out either.

Clip fed rifles are post 1960, and so don't have the tang holes.

Sounds like you were comparing tang holes to tang holes, and those are consistent from 1899 to 1959. Memory always likes to play tricks..
