I know that folks have made 257 Weatherby brass from 7mm Rem Mag brass but I wonder if anyone has tried a similar conversion to make 270 Weatherby brass. Seems like it should work without any issues but I thought I would poke around first.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Jim

I have sized 7 Rem brass to make 7 Wby. I don`t see why you could not do 7mm to .270 Wby. Even tho head space is on the belt, watch that you do not set the shoulder back to far to get the double radius. Check by chambering a case as you resize it. Bolt close will tell you when you are correct for your guns` chamber. Then fireform. You will come up short on neck length, but it dose work in a pinch

It isn't much fun to do with even once fired brass. I've tried it and it was already hardened enough that finished headspace was all over the place.
I never tried it with virgin brass but alot of people say it's ez as pie but the finished shell will be a little short on oal.
I still have on hand some 7mm wby rem brass from years ago and that job is ez as pie for conversion to 270 wby.

I have formed 7mm Rem. brass to 7 mm Wthby brass. It works okay, but the neck comes out slightly short.

This might not bother some people but it does me. The shorter neck could cause some minor erosion at the end of the neck, somewhat like shooting .22 shorts in a .22 LR.

If one values his time, and I do, just spring for some 270 Weatherby brass, and it will have the proper dimensions to start with.

I can see going though the hassles if brass was totally unavailable, but there seems to be plenty of Weatherby and Nosler brass around.

I have formed scores of 270 Wby from 7mm Rem Mag. One simple set up of the FL sizing die, so the bolt barely closes on the resized case, and you're set to make as many as you want.

I have never used new unfired brass. It has all been once-fired, and not one case has failed to size properly.

Win 264 and Win 7 RM brass is much harder than Weatherby brass(NOrma).

When I tried it with once fired brass (and not having much luck) I was going from 7mm rem mag right to 257 wby. Maybe I'd have been smarter going in two steps.....to 270 wby and then 257 wby?? Anyhow I DID NOT have an ez time and attribuited it to being once fired. Also I used imperial sizing wax so I thought I was using "the best".

Going from 7mm rem mag to 257 wby works well with new brass, but with once fired I've had to anneal first.

Thanks for the info. I plan to purchase some of the Norma brass but for lots of shooting it just makes sense to use some of the 7mm brass I have on hand. Thanks again for the responses.

I made 7mm Webby brass from 7mm RM cases, and it was like kraky111 said with me too.

I hadda use NEW brass, and it tweren't easy to gittum all sized down enough. Maybe, had something to do with the particular die and my rifle chamber. ???

I fireformed them afterwards, and they work great, but are jist a little short in the neck.

My reason for doing it was ECONOMY. Weatherby brass is SPENDY-ER than Remington.

You fellows who had trouble with once-fired brass, what was the problem you had sizing it? I have not had any problem using fired 7mm brass.

My problem was that they were just too hard to squeeze down enough to fit my chamber. I was using a Redding Beeg Boss Press, and lubing good too. ???

Others have told me, they didn't have a problem too. ???

I suspect it is/was the comparitive deminsions of my die and chamber.
