Why shoot an antiquated old round at deer when there's so many better out there?

I know...I know, it's my favorite too. I'm just trying to prove to these magno-maniacs I work with that I'm not the only one who thinks so. Please don't flame me too bad!

You're kidding, right?

 1. The .308 will push a 125g Ballistic Tip to 3200fps, a 150g Partition to 3000fps, and a 180g Partition to 2700fps. Any of these will cleanly take deer further than most people should be shooting.
 2. Rifles chambered for the .308 include handy short-action bolt guns and the wonderful Savage 99 lever-gun. You can even get a Winchester 94 in .307 which is basically just a rimmed .308. No magnums allowed here, sorry.
 3. Recoil is relatively mild, making them much more pleasant to shoot.
 4. Ammo is very inexpensive when compared to those "Better" cartridges - except for that other antiquated old round, the .30-06. And plinking ammo is really cheap.
 5. For reloaders, the .308 gets the job done with a more modest dose of powder. (Read that as "cheaper ammo".)
 6. In the minds of many, it is about as perfect a deer caliber as you could want.

The older I get the more I appreciate cartridges that get the job done efficiently and inexpensively, and especially without knocking me backwards into the next county. (Before you start thinking I'm recoil shy, some of my .45-70 loads generate around 48 foot-pounds of recoil, twice what a typical .30-06 generates.) Recently I've been shooting another "antiquated old round", the .257 Roberts, and loving it. (Although all my loads use +P data.) The short-action .257 will be my deer gun in December, with a 115g Barnes TSX at 2958fps. Would love to have a .308 in a short-action too.

No, I'm not a Ruger bigot - just an unabashed fan of their revolvers, M77's and #1's.

A good .30-06 is a 99% solution.

Well, here's one reason:

[Linked Image]

168-grain XXXs at 2650 into .5-.75 inch is another.

Together, they make a MEAN backpacking rifle for everything from elk on down.

Gonna do 150 XXXs next, and heck, if those 130 XXX are really around the corner, I can't see where I'd be needing much else.

'Course, I'm polygunous. (You can cite me. )

I believe that there are more .308's in my neck of the woods than any other caliber.

I own two, but one is a target rifle and one is, well , I don't hunt with it.

Neither is a stock rifle, and i have a hard time hunting with an off the rack job.
Not that I don't have confidence in them, it's just that I like
a little customizing in my rifles.

My rig for this year, however is box stock 7X57.(for now!)

nobody want them any more, so just send em to me and I'll dispose of them for you...(sigh) if I must...

Whatever you are willing to put up with, is exactly what you will have.

PAYPAL, sucks and I will never use them again. I recommend you do the same.

Unreal Question,
thats like saying why shot Rabbits with a .22,sure the .17s awesome, the .22 mag is okay etc etc.
Ever noticed how many of them there are in the feild?, in GunShop racks ?, they are one of the best all rounders money can buy.
And I predict long after your SAUM, and hyper this and super that have faded into the distant past there will still be guys knocking over more deer with .308 , geez dude like the man said, " DEAD IS DEAD"

Because they can turn it into a nice 7mm-08, at least that's what I did with my .308.

(LEFT HAND short action M700 from the early nineties, BTW. )

Oh, and did I mention the way it shoots? See attachment. BOSEG!!!!!

My whitetail rifles for here in the southeast are:
Remington 700 BDL SS DM in .308
Savage 99EG in .300 Savage (the Army's starting model for the .308)
Winchester 94 in .307 Win.

Hmmm, anyone notice a pattern here?

I guess all of us who shoot magnums are just mindless boobs incapable of independent thought! There is nothing wrong (& many things right) with a 308, and someday may (pronounced right now actually ) want one myself ... but what is wrong with CHOOSING a magnum? We all have our reasons for choosing what we want to shoot. For the hunting I do, I am the first to admit I don't need a .300 WBY or a 7mm WBY or a .257 WBY (don't have one of these ... but I can dream ... can't I?), because I don't need it ... I shouldn't hunt with it, b/c now I'm a "magno-maniac"? When the hell did NEED become part of the equation? While at work when I talk about rifles (not very often, since not many here even know the muzzle from the butt), but I always get asked .... "WHY DO YOU NEED ANOTHER RIFLE" .... and these are the same jackasses that have many other things they like, but when it comes to guns, why do you NEED such a thing. Same thing happens here ... Why do you NEED a magnum .... because I FRIGGIN' like them. If you like a .308 and can shoot it well there is very little you cannot do with it .... but why the need to justify your choice by knocking those who CHOOSE to shoot something other than you??

Sorry George...didn't want to ruffle any feathers! I'm surrounded by a bunch of "new" hunters who are being convinced that it's not only OK, but NECESSARY, to shoot whitetail deer with "at least" a 7mm Rem Mag! As a Texas boy, you know a Texas buck rarely weighs 175#, and averages 75! I just don't want these new hunters (which we need to incourage desperately) to get frightened off by equipment that they can't handle, can't afford and don't need.

ltppowell, I too wonder why anybody would shoot a .308 at a Texas (or Missouri) whitetail. A .250 Savage should be rifle enough for that! ;-)

Spot On, MM.

The 308 Winnie is just too dull, too plain and too efficient for most folks. I tell people its the minivan of cartridges. And it really is. It plain works. Its cheap and easy to use. Boring efficiency.

I have one and have another on order.

OK, I'm from south texas and I use a VSL 7-08 for my longer shots and a 308 Whitworth to carry and for shots under 200yds. The only reason I confine it to shorter shots is that I use 150gn Power Points and they have the BC of a grape. Using the 308 and a 165BT I don't believe that there is a better derr rifle up to 300yds. and that's longer than 99% of us should shoot anyway. Mags are fine if you want, but not needed. capt david.

"It's not how hard you hit 'em, it's where you hit 'em." The 30-06 will, with the right bullet, successfully take any game animal in North America up to 300yds.

I believe that we all should try to have at least "one of each, please".

My gun room (ran outa racking a while ago) holds everything from a 17 Rem to a 450 Ackley, and I just plain love to shoot any and all of 'em.

So saying, I hunted for the last 10 years with a nice light 308. I sold that rifle for a song to a young fella just starting out in family lifeas well as hunting. He didn't have much money, but he surely wanted to hunt. What's a fella t do?

Now I have to find a new 308 hunting rifle (I do have several other 308s, but I really feel the need to replace that little Mountain Rifle). I guess I will just have to start looking again (sigh).
