The Hodgdon reloading manual says you can easily get 3000 fps with 140s in the .284 Winny and 2900+ with 150s (at over 52000 CUP). Are these velocities realistic? I would appreciate those of you with experience to share the velocities you obtained with this cartridge.

Thanks.

I load the .284 WIN for a 43 year old Model 88 Winchester, so I am purposely staying under the MAX load in deference to ease of extraction (as recommended by Speer in their manual).

I clocked the following loads using a Beta Master Chrony set 10' from the muzzle of my 22" barreled M88:
Winchester Super-X 150 grain PSP factory load - 2782 fps @ 75F.
54.0 grains WIN 760 & 145 grain Speer HotCore - 2934 fps @ 79F.
57.0 grains H4831SC & 145 grain Speer HotCore - 2705 fps @ 75F.

PS The last load is consistently the most accurate in my rifle and the cases extract easily (even when I fired them with the chamber warmed up from firing groups) - it is my hunting load even though it is the slowest. I own a bolt action .270 WIN to use when I want faster/flatter. If you own a bolt gun I am sure you can obtain what Hodgdon lists safely - it is only a little more than I am getting with the 145HC/WIN760 load.

PPS Check out this article for some good info on what you can do with the .284 WIN:

Those numbers are absolutely realistic. I haven't tried the 150 gr bullets in my .284, an older ULA, pre-Colt, with a 22" barrel. But I routinely shoot 140 gr bullets of several persuasions: Nosler Partitions, Solid Bases, and Ballistic Tips, mostly. A guy can get 3000 fps with 140 gr bullets using IMR4350, Melvin Forbes favorite powder. This powder works well for me too. I also like the obsolete Hodgdon H-205 and Re-19.

It is possible to get 3000 fps with the 284 and 140 gr bullets, these are some of my favorite loads however none of them hit 3000 fps.

54 gr RL 17
140 gr Barnes xlc
2960 fps
shoots 1 inch groups
With 55 gr I got 3010 fps but accuracy was not as good.

52.5 gr RL 17
140 gr Nosler partition
2890 fps
shoots 1 inch groups

54 gr RL 19
160 gr sierra game king
2700 fps
groups slightly over 1 inch

My first 284 bbl, was a 4 land one and I got 3080fps routinely with 139's out of 22.5" of bbl, cases lasted over 6 loadings.

My new barrel is 24" and I am getting close to 3050fps with 140's or 139's, it's a 6 land tube, and seems to give way to pressures sooner than the older bbl.

I had a 25" Lilja that would run 140's at just under 3100, boosted by H-414.
I'd say the manual's realistic.
