What are the 338-06 fans seeing for actual velocities?

My NULA .338-06 will do 2800fps with 210 gr. Nosler partitions but most I read about only attain 2750. I also got 2500 fps with 250s but see little need for this weight in this cartride for my use.

With 215 SGKs and BLC-(2) 2700 fps, with 200 gr Ballistic Silvertips and the same powder I'm at about 2850 fps.

These are from a 22" barrel.

It is hard to believe they nobody marketed this caliber more. Would have been a great mountain bold gun or in a Browning BAR. I am going to build either a Remington 700 or Ruger Hawkeye in 338-06. MY target weight for the rifle is under 8 lbs all up with a Zeiss Conquest.

After using one on a variety of game, I came to the conclusion that if you own a .300 Wby and a .375 H&H, there's hardly any reason to have one. On the other hand, if you don't own either, there's little that can't be done with the .338-06.

Nice velocity you got with RL-17

What primer and brass were you using.

Group size?

Thanks

I believe my 24" Encore barrel gives about 2750 fps with 200 grain Accubond and Re 15. Plenty accurate for elk, too.

Norma Brass
CCI Mag primer

My accuracy load ended up being 61 grain reloader 17 for three bullets touching with an average velocity of 2761 fps. 62.5 was under 1 1/4" three shot 100 yd group.

PLEASE NOTE THAT MY RIFLE HAS A FAIR AMOUNT OF FREEBORE. In a rifle without Freebore I'd expect Max load to be 2 to 3 grains less. I started at 56 grains and worked up.

Sir....I agree with you. 2400 fps is most certainly plenty. That will kill any critter with authority. laugh
