I am new to this forum but not to the outdoors. I hunt and trap anything legal at the time.
I am going to try my hand at black bear snareing this fall in Maine and would like to hear from anyone whom has done so in the past.

Welcome Gnatcatcher! I have no experience here, but will be very interested in reading any good informed responses. Snaring bears sounds like a hoot.

Not many area's allow it. I'd love a bear/lion season tho.

Maine is the only state I have heard of that allows it. Maybe Alaska? I dunno.

You need to read the exploits of E.N. Woodcock in "50 Years a Hunter & Trapper". He did all that stuff.

I was out there a number of years ago (2003 i think), back when you could still use the big steel. I caught a 180 lb. male on the 2nd day, it was a pretty exciting morning. I would like to get back out there and catch one in a snare.....but time, money, and an assortment of other trips havent allowed it yet. Good luck on your trip, let us know how it turns out.

I've caught 7 black bears in the past 4 years great fun but still hard to do.biggest I've caught went around 250 lbs the rest was between 150 lbs and 200 lbs.The main thing about trapping black bears make shure they cant come in over the back of your pound.

Many years ago, My very elderly neighbors were having bear problems in their sheep.....I was given a permit to trap em....

I lashed a dead and smelly sheep to a tree and built a pup tent size cubby out from the bait with the snare in the mouth of teh cubby. Next morning the old folks called to tell me there was a lot of racket in the pasture.....had a 200 pounder around the neck.

I made the snare from 1/4" wire rope using a piece of angle iron for a lock......I think a good wolf snare would work for most black bears....

I know a fellow that has snared a few by lashing a 5 gallon bucket horizontally to a tree....four feet off the ground....bait in back of pail and wolf snare in mouth of pail...this works well for catchingby the paw.....
