Does anyone have some starting loads for this cartridge. I am building one and was wondering where to start. I was going to use 600gr Woodlieghs, and start with 460 brass.
Thanks

Yeah, start with one hydrocodone plus two asprin and 1/2 of an Advil then work up from there. With experience you can add some Pendleton Bourbon mixed 50/50 with Amarula (From Africa, got to have that dark continent flavour and ambience here) until hazy enough to shoot one of these damnable things.

Good luck, glad it ain't me.

Did you find a stash of Brontosaurus somewhere that we all missed out on?

After the last one I shot, I would suggest a starting load on one 215 Federal primer and a bullet.:)

Well the thread on 416 for deer got me thinking. My 416 had deer going 50 yards after the shot, my 460 had them going 20 yards. So my thinking is a 510 will be just right for deer. Some DRT's. I figure its like everything else in life thats addictive. I just gotta keep going until I find my max. The 460 was a challenge but I can shoot it pretty good. It has only a scope so I figure I'll make a 510 with open sights. I won't give myself a new eyebrow on this one. I hope its big enough, but in a way I hope it isn't so I have to get a 550 or 600.
I wonder if craziness is recoil induced. laugh

The 500 A-sqaure is pretty close in dimensions to the wells, so I'd suggest a copy of A-squares loading manual for data.

I'd thought about building a 600 overkill, but fortunately my 500 Jeffrey arrived before I went down the 600 road. The 458 lott has signifigant recoil, so I figured the 500 Jeffrey wouldn't be too bad. Well my starting loads were 100gr of RL 15 over a 600 gr bullet, and they clocked 2200 fps. Well, I have yet to work up a max load!

Maybe when I get a decent stock on the Jeffrey I'll get back to load work, or not.

I have a .500 A2 and the cases are virtually identical. I have a reasonable amount of loading data and the A2 reloading manual.

One caveat: a fellow .500 A2 owner on another board has a custom rifle that develops significantly higher pressure than mine with the same loads. You must shoot some reference loads before you use the A2 manual so you know where you stand.

With the 600 gr woodleigh, try 120 gr of IMR 4350. In my rifle, I get about 2225 fps. This is a very low pressure load. Barring some defect in your rifle, you can't stuff enough IMR 4350 in the case (with a 600 gr woodleigh) to exceed maximum safe pressures. If you want, drop down to 110 gr of IMR 4350 and shoot that first as a sanity check before proceeding upward.

You can pm me for more aggressive data, but you MUST shoot some low pressure reference loads over a chronograph before using it.

The A-Square "Any Shot You Want" book has load data for the 500 A2, 495 A2, 500 Jeff amongst others ...

Big bores don't kill fast, they kill sure! and leave a good blood trail...You want fast kills use a 220 Swift and hope for the best, 99% will hit the dirt at the shot, 1% will get away.

Just shoot those nice soft Woodleigh 535g softpoints in your 500 Wells for deer at 2450 fps. They'll open up to an 1 1/4" and do just fine ...

I know that smaller guns will give the DRT's but whats the fun in that. I have found some lighter Woodleighs and will use them also for fun and practice. I think I need to use 600's though just to give the 460 a reason for staying in the safe.

Yeah I'm in the process of switching over from 570g TSX's to 570g Swift A-Frames. I plan to use those for everything from deer, elk, to brown bear and cape buffalo. I'm also waiting for the 600g North Forks Softpoints to come out ... It's nice there are so many good choices in .510 caliber now ...
