Guys I am a Winchester man for the most part but my collectingof rifles is what I call Classic bolt actions.

Therefore I picked up a very nice model 1920 in a .300 Sav

The serial # is 9062 on the reciever but the stock and butt plate is #9640 and it looks like it has been shot very little.

I reside in Nevada and bought it from a gent in Mass.

It has the rear sight removed and a filler installed the front sight is a ungodly looking copper blade. With a redfield peep installed in the bridge. The sock is in very good shape but the serial # makes me believe it is from a model 26.

It does not have the matte finish that I have seen on the other model 1920 I have seen here but a deep polished blue instead. I dont think it is original but whoever refinished it did it superbly.
Anyways I know there are some passionate Savage collectors here that can help me out.

Pictures would really help.

The SN is too low to be a 20/26, as the conversion started around 10,500.

Redfield never made a receiver sight for the 1920, so that that isn't right. The front sight on a 1920 would be a blade pinned into a ramp that is integral with the barrel.

Again, pictures would really help.

We just recently did the "what differentiates a 1920 from a 20/26". If you do a search on "Savage 1920" and "260remguy" you'll probably find it.

Is there a stamp S3 on the butt stock behind the Buttplate?

Based on some sales records that I have ( grin) I would say 1924+or-.

Steve, what's with the "S3" code?

RandyS and I are probably the guys here with the most 1920 & 20/26 experience. I don't know about RandyS, but I've been collecting the 1920s & 20/26s for over 25 years, have owned around 100 of them, and have researched them extensively.

Based on the information that you've posted, I have tried to point out where your rifle's attributes are out of sync with the cataloged specs. Based on your description, there are several non-cataloged attributes, so I'd have to say that it is NOT original.

As of 02/04/10, there is 1 1920 and 2 20/26 rifles listed on GB. None of these rifles are original, as they all have been modified from the "correct" factory specs.

If you want to send some clear pictures to me, at remguy260msn.com, I can offer to provide a more informed opinion as to the originality of your rifle. Without being able to see the rifle in person, or via a series of clear and detailed pictures, I don't know that I can offer any additional input.
