No, do what most of us do, get them both and sell the one you like the best.

I'd get a Security Six any day over a 66 and I am not a Ruger fan. The Security Six was plenty good and didn't need the upgrade to the GP100. That said, I like the GP100 very much. The 66 won't stand up to a steady diet of full power .357's. The Ruger will. Those slim grips on the Ruger are better than they look too.

When you get into .357's, I like the 686/586/681/581's, the GP100, the Security Six, Colt Trooper, Python and the 27. IMO the 19/13/65/66 models are more on the order of a Colt Magnum Carry (.357 Detective Special), carried lots and shot little.

Good thought, and if you do so, PM me first when you decide to part with one.

YEAH CY, but then I won't stand up to a steady diet of full house maggies either.

1975 4" Service Six,....has a nice, rounded, victorian air about it.

I've tried a bunch of the .357's,...pretty much all of those which are commonly available. This is the one I settled on.

Two very different guns.

The K frame is sleek and more compact and is better as a .38 +p.

If you are considering a Ruger double action you may as well look at a pre lock 586 or 686. That would be my pick.

I like 3 inch K frames in .38 and the L frame in .357.

I don't believe that Terry. You just need a 27 to shoot them in! wink 8 3/8"

I think the Security Six has better balance than the SP101.The 686 can be fined tuned better than the Six,but for saddel carry I prefer the Six. (I have both)

My very first mag was a six 4" stainless in 1978 NIB. Put the larger grips for a better hold. I've owned as many as 11 at one time. When I would see a clean used or NIB it was mine. Friends and relatives talked me out of most of them. I still have the first one that I purchased. Bet it has at least 6,000 rounds put down the tube. Heavy diet of mag loads shot all the time. Ruger smith worked on the trigger. Was still in specs when he worked on it. One tough handgun.

Have owned both.

I had a Security-Six that I inherited from my Dad when he passed on.
I had the barrel cut to 3" and round butted the gripframed.
It was a great gun, I passed it on to my Son.

My all-time favorite was a S&W 19 with a 2.5" barrel. For some reason I could "hit" really well with this gun.

Should have NEVER traded it off...

I have had a 3" S&W Mod. 66 for many years and have put thousands of .38 Special rounds through it. I have not put a lot of .357 rounds through it. It has adjustable sights and rides in a Kramer horse hide scabbard. It is an accurate hand gun that has a great trigger pull. When it comes to double action revolvers S&W is the only way to go for me. The exception is in calibers .44 mag. and .45 Colt if one is planning on shooting hundreds of full throttle 300 grain or heavier grain bullets. Even then I will stick with my N Frame S&W Mountain Gun. Ruger makes good hand guns, so does S&W.

The S&W is a sleeker gun, that said, with a steady diet of magnum loads the S&W will shoot loose and will need repairs (been there done that). I've never had a Ruger revolver shoot loose on me. Your choice, depending on what's important to you.

Have owned 686 and gp100 and carried Security 6 as security officer, the 686 is a great looking gun but i always felt better shooting + ps in it. I had the trigger and action worked on the ruger gp100 and used it on everything from bullseye thru to bowling pin rapid fire 3.2 seconds to hit 5 pins . It was also great on pigs with heavy loads a great reliable gun at a good price .

I'll go one better. Try to find a used Ruger Service Six. I found one many years ago in a pawn shop. It had been a Boston PD gun and had been "shot in" over a lifetime. It still locked up tight, and the action was smooth as silk. Functions flawlessly. The stainless finish was beat to hell, but I fixed the appearance by having a smith pal bead-blast the entire gun to a matte finish. Put on new Pachmayr grips. My shooting pals are more than a little jealous over this particular revolver.

Before I got my M19 (I know, it's not a 66 but...) I probably would have rooted for the Security Six. Now, I'll have to cast my vote for a M66 or M19. Maybe I was just lucky in more ways than just the price but I cannot believe how smooth the DA pull is on mine. With Safariland neoprene grips, it fits my hands like no other. I can draw it with my eyes closed and when I open them, the sights are pretty much aligned. Combine that with it's ultra smooth trigger and accuracy and it's a no brainer for me. I'm sure the Ruger would last longer on a magnum load diet but what helped my decision is how I load my handguns anyway. I have a Ruger SRH in 44mag that is as delicate as an anvil but I'd say that 95%+ of the loads I shoot through it are mild to maybe medium handloads. So there's that.
