The 7mm-08 has the edge in BC and sectional density thus it will shoot a tad flatter. If I intended to shoot mostly bullets over 150 grains I would opt for the 308.

I will start shooting a 7mm-08 when I defect to Europe and wear a kilt when hunting. Damn it we are Americans and we base measurements on an inch not a mm. Shoot the .308 and you will love it.

Both excellent. Splitting hairs here but if I had to pick just one it would be the 308.

It's really so close your comparing apples to apples and to argue one over the other would be senseless, both are great cartridges and I'll leave it at that.(But I do like the .308 a little better )...................547.

Have heard a lot of good things about the 7mm-08, but i can't imagine what the 7mm-08 will do that can't be done better with a 308 Less recoil for similar ballistics (trajectory and retained velocity and energy) and on-target results. I love my .308 Win but have found 7mm RM loads at 100fps above 7mm-08 velocities to be quite adequate for elk.

No, I'm not a Ruger bigot - just an unabashed fan of their revolvers, M77's and #1's.
A good .30-06 is a 99% solution.

I vote to go heavier
If you shooting things "closer" you don't need speed.
If you have a slightly off shot, more lead is a good thing.
358, or even the 338 federal is all good.
If your going for flexibility 308 If your going for less kick 7-08 (still plenty of bang)

I've always opted for the full grown .308, that is to say the 30-06 so I can't talk about the .308. But I've been shooting a 7-08 since they were a wildcat. And they just smooth get the job done. Wide range of bullet types and weights and the round is very easy to load for. You can hardly name a mid range powder that the 7-08 won't give you sub MOA group using. Modest recoil. Women and kids can aclimate to the recoil easily. Its performance window lends itself to good use of standard bullets. No need for boutique bullets to get the job done with a 7-08. And it is sudden death on WTs, mulies, and antelope. I've never done so but quite a few folks use the 7-08 for their elk hunting. It's kinda like, what's not to like about the 7-08. The .308 may do all these things too. I don't know.
Aim for the exit hole.
