I recently sold my 300 Weatherby but still have 6 boxes of 200 grain Partitions that I used to shoot in it. I have a 300 WSM Browning SS and was wondering if I should load these partitions for it.

I have yet to try a 200 grainer in the 300 wsm but I did load some 190 grain hornady BTSPs up and got 2900 fps with them. My plan had been to use Barnes TSX 168s in the wsm but with 300 of the partitions on hand I'm tempted to go with them.

What do you think? 200g partition at an estimated 2800 fps or 168g TSX at 3100 fps. I use the 300 wsm mostly for elk.

I love the long partitions. Very reliable. They would have to be seated deep in a short mag but if you can reach 27-2800ft/sec who cares? The 168 Barnes X is plenty long too.

Why not try 'em and see which shoots best in your rifle?

A 200 grain partition would be good elk medicine. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Give both of them a try and let us know how it works out.

I'm curious as to what velocities you can get with the 200 grainers in the 300wsm.

I am also curious as to the velocities you can get safely with the 200 Partition in the WSM. I shoot it in my 30-06 and the 30-338. The former gets 2700, the latter 3000, so It will be in between there somewhere, I imagine. In any case, that 200 is a very effective projectile, I wouldn't hesitate to smack a big Bruin with it, even out of my '06. Regards, Eagleye

Hope this isn't changing the subject to bad but...

Can one of you with a 168 and 180 XXX give me the length of each bullet?

thanks.

You may not be able to get quite 2800 fps, but even 2750 is going to serve you well.
The TSX will more likely give you two holes, if that's what you're after, but the Partition may very well do the same.
Are you sure you can get 3100 from that TSX? Those are pretty long bullets.

BurleyBoy,

I have the same rifle and use 180 gr TSX, and they should leave 2 holes in an elk if they leave 4 holes in two deer (one nearly lengthwise).

Last weekend I got a pretty good recommendation from one of the workers at the Hogden. He stopped by while I was shooting and he told me he and his son just got done testing the 200 gr Accubonds and they group great. I'll be trying those next!

Good luck...

Hey spotshooter or anyone else who might know, what kind of ballistics can you expect from the 200 gr accubond 180 gr TSX or the 200 gr NP. Say out to 500 yds thanks CD

Eagle eye, Have you used the 200part on any small deer? All the deer in Canada can't be that big. Just wondering how it would open on something smaller. capt david <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

"It's not how hard you hit 'em, it's where you hit 'em." The 30-06 will, with the right bullet, successfully take any game animal in North America up to 300yds.

If you are a hunter, and farther than that, get closer!

Out of a 26" barrel, I was able to get 2900 fps with H 4350 and the 200 gr Accubond, but settled on a 2800 fps load as it was more accurate in my 300 WSM. Shot last year's bull elk broadside at under 200 yards, bullet went through the rearward meat of both shoulders, and caught one rib but no shoulder bone. The bullet was recovered under the offside hide and retained 67% of its mass.
The 200 Accubond was also used to take a feral pig this last spring, and the bullet penetrated through the pig. It was shot broadside, behind the shoulders, at 20 yards.

My dad had some old (the machined ones) 200 gr. Partitions hanging around, so I loaded them in my SAUM. With my hunting 165's sighted in at 2.5", the 200's hit dead on- I've been using them for jackrabbits.

Contrary to popular belief, the 200-grain Nosler Partition takes up no more "extra powder room" in the .300 WSM than it does in the .300 Win. Magnum or the .300 Weatherby Magnum. In all three the base of the bullet sticks down about .2 inch below the neck when seated to normal OAL.

For some reason (probably the ignorance of some gun writers) many shooters always suppose that long bullets don't work very well in short cartridges. This is false, for reasons we don't have space for here. At any rate, you can get around 2900 fps with the 200 Partition in a 24" barrel, or close enough to it not to matter. Take a look at the loading manuals.

This is a great all-around bullet in any .30 from the '06 up. It will indeed expand on "small deer." In fact, I've taken pronghorns with it in the '06 and it expanded fine.

All Partitions are designed so that the front half will open up easily even on smallish big game. Even the .300-grain .375 will open up nicely on small deer.

The 30 cal. 200 NP has been the most devistating bullet I have ever used on elk. Its a hammer. Some say there is no difference between it and a 180, but I have to disagree. The
200 has more wonga to it.

On one elk hunt I shot an elk at some distance, the bullet killed him and the spike who stepped in, on the other side of him. Both dropped at the same time with hardly two steps taken between the two of them. I lost a whole shoulder on the first elk and lost other shoulders when I used it to kill other elk. Thats the down side to this bullet, but then I had a 3000 fps MV out of a 26" 300 mag. Maybe that made a difference.
It does anchor them though.

Two elk with one bullet, I ended up filling my brothers tag.
Not something I like to do.

SU35--

Your experience with the 200 NP parallels mine exactly. I load it to 2950 in my 25" barreled .300 Winchester. I have yet to recover one from anything--and I have recovered several 180 NP's.

If you compare the ballistics of it to the 225 Partition in a 338, you'll find it is equal almost all the way out, then waaay out there it is MORE. That was my bullet of choice when I hunted with a 300 and it was instant drops with it on elk. Great bullet. I did recover one once, inside the skin in the off shoulder after it broke both shoulders. Great combination for elk!!

SU35,
I've got a great idea! When you and I draw bull elk tags for you-know-where, you can load up that rifle and bring it, but I get the first shot! Turn about is fair play, ya know.

If you're not willing to be a good sport, I'll have to zap 'em with my lowly .270 ...
