336 (A ? ) 24" 1948 date maybe 80% (wood better then that) with a redfield reciever sight (model 70 ?)....missing the bullseye !

While not the authoritative history of the gun this will help you discover the date of manufacture. That will help you determine if it was factory tapped, etc. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marlin_Model_336Sight unseen I would probably say $250-300.

I would have to disagree, but would need to see pictures for a more specific value. 1948 is the first year of production for the 336. Also if the gun is NOT D&T'd then that will add to the value. Finally the values of Marlins as of late has been inflated to say the least. Even trying to find a new one is difficult many times. I would say $350 on the low low low end, and closer to $500+ for something with wear but without any major cosmetic issues.

the gun hasnt been D&T for a scope mount, hence the owner elected to remove the rear sight and mount the reciever sight at time of purchase

Bought one exactly like the OP, maybe a little better condition, last fall at the Yuma gunshow for $285.00.
