If I am not mistaken a 30-06 length will work. I had some interest in the steyr but ended up with a 9.3x62 instead.

Wasn't the original intention to use a scout rifle? Hornady manual notes COL of 3.110

I 'm sure that a short action could be made to handle the Steyr, with some mods, but I also think that a standard length action would give you more options with magazine length and bullet seating depth. Might have to put a spacer into the magazine.

the steyr will have to be in a lA if you use a traditional american action. the SBS SA is made to fit the 376 exactly. theres a nice custom mauser on gunbroker for $500 right now. i would suggest a 22" barrel if your not going to have a factory steyr barrel. they get it done with less length. http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=149234693

a LR mid length Mauser would work well....such as a Yugo M48 or Yugo 24/47....some mexican mausers are LR mid-length also. they have a mag box that is 3.250 IIRC.

I'm in the process of building one on a Montana 1999 "short action" which is actually an intermediate. Mag length is 3.15.

If you need an LR then I'd do the 375 Ruger, personally.
I've often wondered why the 376 didn't do better. The load manuals certainly make it look appealing.
Now the issue that would hold me back is availability. I handload, but it sure would suck to have a great Alaskan or African adventure all laid to waste cuz you couldn't find ammo... not that Ruger is everywhere... yet.

If you want a great custom Big Bore I have a great 458 Lott Custom Sako in the classifieds that won't destroy your bank account.

There was some made on Steyr Scout action, i got one and it's the same as the 308 one, a bit larger than a small action, can call it "intermediaire" may be!

It fits an intermediate length action with its 60 mm case, I had one in the S-M ProHunter model. I have a commercial Mauser action intermediate length action that I thought about converting to .376 Steyr, but my .375 Ruger keeps telling me not to bother.
It is a great cartridge, just did not get enough marketing from S-M...jim

gotta agree with jim. its not a popularity contest. the 376 is a monumental round. probably better than any other 375 caliber before or since. it just didnt get the backing and its first rifle was too light for it. same thing happens all the time. a company brings out a great round but then gets the twist wrong ect ect.

I have taken a number of African animals & a free range water buffalo with mine. Great caliber that simply died shortly after birth. I have hundreds of cases to last several life times. I would never take it as a sole caliber to Africa since I have had ammo lost twice. In both cases the airline delivered before I started hunting but ---.

The 376 is almost perfect for a Yugo Mauser 48 or 24/47. Makes an nice inexpensive big bore suitable for big bad game. A couple of Steyr Scouts were offered to me for trade-ins, owners couldn't take the recoil. Didn't want their guns but I bought their once fired brass and remaining loads after finding a deal on a new reamer. Both scouts floated around gun and pawn shops for months, don't know what ever happened to them. I have a second Yugo barreled right now. Just received a laminated Richard's Microfit stock with decelerator pad to finish up the project. Big bores with cast bullets are gaining popularity for big pigs. If you build one use a medium weight barrel and keep it 19"to 20" Keep the total weight about 8.5+ lbs. Its not a 308 but any experienced shooter can handle it without flinching. On the other hand if you have a 375 R reamer and a LA on hand go for broke. I'll bet a Grizz will never know the differnce. After you get used to a 376 your next step up should be a 416 Taylor. Oww!
