Anybody have one of these? Other than being a gas hog, how is this motor, mostly reliability wise? I'm looking for an F250 gas and at first was only looking at the V8's. But I'm not going to be driving it much at all so I don't know if fuel mileage is really much of a concern. Would be used for some hunting trips and occasionally pulling a horse trailer with only one or two horses and not very long distances either.

Had one in a '99 F250 4x4 CC- nice truck and very smooth running engine. It gave me no problems; traded it in on a 2000 dually, same engine. I was towing twin-engine offshore boats at the time. The dually never got double-digits for fuel mileage, unloaded or loaded. For a gasser, it had decent power and torque but would downshift and 'hunt' gears in hill country when towing. I traded it on a diesel (7.3) and have never gone back to gas.
I have a cousin that has one in a Ford van, has had it for 9 years and has pulled big campers from Ohio to Florida every year with it. The gas mileage stinks, but he hasn't had any problems with the engine. One tranny rebuild however.

had one for my work truck. It was damn reliable, and had all the power a guy could need. It did like gas.

If you got the taller gears, you mpg would improve, since you're not pulling that much. Even if you did, there is plenty of power there to do it.

I am wondering why you say that ?

My understanding is the V10 is basically a modular 5.4 and they share many of the same components .

Also , guys with the V10 s claim they get about as good a fuel economy as a 3/4 or 1 ton with the 5.4....

I have an F350 with 105,000 miles on it. The V10 has never had any problems. The transmission is the 5-speed manual, and if I keep it around 65 it gets around 16 mpg, but if I speed up to 80 mileage goes down around 13. When hauling my 19-foot camper trailer mileage is around 10, and there's plenty of power.

Know several commercial users that got tired of their Ford diesels and went with the V10s in the past few years. All still seem to be happy, especially now that it's winter again?

One is a cousin that once ran three Ford diesel 4x4 pickups and one stake body dump, all used commercially, all also used as snow plow trucks. The dump is the only diesel truck he still uses, think it's an F500? He said that one is about to go, too.

If three or more people think you're a dimwit, chances are at least one of them is right.

I'm not familiar with the Chevy or Dodge motors at all. However, the remarks about the Ford V10 are plain, unadulterated BS.

I can not speak about the new FORD V-10 for the year 2010 but I can about the V-10 in a friends motorhome and my F-350 Superduty with a V-10 and 4 x 4. Now I have gotten as good as 15mpg on the interstate highway with cruise control set at 72mph traveling empty. The truck weighs in at 6500-lbs, with single rear wheels and .373 gear ratio.

Now around town (stop & go driving) it gets 11.5 to 12.5 mpg and that is a fact. A Ford 5.3 engine gets 1.5 gallons better fuel mileage at beat! Pulling 12,000 lbs it gets 9-mpg. It is quite and has plenty of pulling power. It may not be a diesel but the gas is cheaper. I know of several folks who have had very good luck with the V-10 FORDS and put over 180,000 miles on them before they went down for repairs.

I have a friend that just purchased a new Dodge diesel in 2008 and he only gets 14.5 mpg on the highway traveling at 70 mph. Pulling 12,000 lbs, he gets right at 12.5 mpg. His truck is a dually with 17,000 miles on it so far.

Now to say that the Ford 5.3 is a better engine is a crock of Bull Crap plainly put. I don't know of any F-250 with a 5.3 gas engine that is rated to pull 12,000 pounds, certainly NOT without changing the rear end gears to 456 ratio and your gas mileage would disappear or at least go down to 7.5 mpg.
No way does a 5.3 Ford engine, have the 460 plus pounds of torque needed to pull heavy loads like a V-10 engine.

Ford doesn't make a 5.3L engine, Chevy does. Ford makes a 5.4L engine which IIRC, is the same as the Ford 6.8L V10 with two less cylinders.

I know a bunch of guys with Ford 6.8L V10 engines in F-250 and F-350's and they've been great motors. A 413 cid V10 engine with 362 HP and 457 lbft. of torque aint nothing to shake a stick at.

I had four 2003-2006 Superduty's at once, three Powerstrokes and one V10

The V10 truck I still have. It's the only one of the four that never had the motor pulled, the only one that never spent a month per year at the dealer, and the only one that had never been towed for a mech failure.

The V10 has always sold poorly, but it is a very good option for people who tow heavy but don;t put on a lot of miles over the life of a vehicle.

Mike you didnt wreck the thread. I like the V-10. I hate working on them but I like them.

Right now I'm rebuilding one and I just have to scratch my head wondering what the hell the engineers were thinking. I'm sure it looks good on paper but what happen to 4 bolt mains? not this bolt in swedge type 2 bolt crap. and I'm sorry, any time you need a balancer on one side of the engine, it shouldnt be built.

That being said, I like the v-10 for its power for being a gasser. it can pull its weight.

Some people just don't wish to believe the FACTS!!! The V-10 is a very good engine and has been for several years. The Truck Industry has simply jumped on the fact that consumers want to drive a diesel truck to work, instead of a gas rig.

The very best engine that FORD has produced in this century has been the 4.6 and those are getting over 200,000 Plus miles on them without a major mechanical failure. Our local Ford dealership has 3 such vans and trucks with over 230,000 miles on them and they haven't broke down yet for a major problem.

However, the V-10 Ford engine is not being produced because of company cut backs and less sales on the E-350 models. Consumers are going the route of the F-250 gas rig instead with the 5.4 engine.......NOT because the V-10 is a pos Jack! Pull your head out of your arse before you make blanket statements that have no real bearing on the true facts. I got the word from the dealer himself....Dah!
