Which powder do you prefer for hunting with 150-160 gr H4350, H4831sc, or reloader 17? Max col is 2.8". I do like the H4831sc but I find it hard to fit it all in at that col.

Personally RL 17 is my favorite powder for the 284, it beats all the other powders that I have tried. I am getting groups of 1 inch or less with 140 and 160 gr bullets, IMR 4831 comes in a close second.

Began loading for the 284 around 30 yrs ago. Win 760 or IMR 4350 was the best back then. 760 was temp sensitive. IMR 4350 didn't fit that well. Then came H4350 which solved those two issues, it has finer grained powder and is pretty consistent over a wide range of temps. Used it for many years until RL-17 showed. Now using RL-17 exclusively.

RL17 is magic in my 284 pushing 160 partitions. Changed after many years with other powders. Tim

I shoot a lot of the 4350s and a fair amount of R-19. Melvin Forbes of NULA likes 4350, and so do I. My best load is with the 140 Nosler Balistic Tip behind IMR4350.
I have yet to try ANY R-17 in my rifles. That will probably be a good summer project for me.....

I had great results with RL22 in my first 284bbl,(3080fps, 139gr, 22.5"bbl) the new barrel show prefrence to H4350, (3050fps, 140gr, 24" bbl.)
Dang I miss that ol' 4 land bbl, but things wear out in the end.

IMR 4350 under 120 B'Tips, as well as the 154 Hornady RN & SP.
I hate cutting those LOGS but it works. Maybe some Ramshot Hunter or Magnum will be tried in the future.

I have had my best luck with H4831SC and a Speer 145 grain HotCore. I chose the bullet to give as much weight as possible in a short length as I am shooting hunting loads in a M88 Winchester (1 1/2" avg is as good as I achieve at 100 yards). If was shooting a NULA or other custom bolt I would probably achieve better results with a different bullet.

RL-17 and IMR 4350 work have worked well in my 284 win. This is with either 140 gr TTSX or 150 gr Partitions or Ballistic Tips. Have only shot game with the 140 TTSX out of this gun and have no complaints. Great cartridge IMO.

Go to this website, www.alliantpowder.comThe data is limited, RL17 is similiar to IMR 4350, I used that data to build my loads and did not run into any issues.

All Alliant has to offer is a 110 grain plinking bullet load using Re15 & Re19 - go figure!

Melvin Forbes recommended 55 grains of IMR 4350 and a 140 Grain Nosler Partition when I bought my ULA in 1990. It's all I've ever used and has killed hell out of sheep, goats, caribou, and elk since then. There may be a better load for paper however.
