Well I got a boat paddled Ruger .223 from my father not too long ago. I just couldn't warm up to that stock, funny because when I was in my early teens and they came out I thought they were awesome. Anyway I whipped out the old Krylon fusion camo colors and went to town this weekend.

always thought a boat paddled .223 would be an extremely useful ranch rifle for filling feeders, or for strapping to the 4wheeler when running the fences, etc, but never got one...yet.

Did you rough up the stock before painting?

BTW, I used those Krylon paints to paint my trekking poles/shooting sticks. Does not seem to be very durable. Coming off fast under very little use. Is that normal?

Nope didn't rough it up at all. According to Krylon the Fusion line has properties similar to "self etching" primers, in other words if you give it a clean, degreased base it will adhere. That said I am usually starting on a bare surface. If I was going over an already painted surface I would certainly rough it up or take it off completely. I have painted several stocks with Krylon, and I have a bit of a system. The first thing is to degrease the stock really well. I use everclear, it has a higher alcohol content than Isopropyl alcohol, and seems not to leave any trace after drying. Isopropyl alcohol is 87.9% alcohol, and everclear can be obtained in most states up to 95%.
After that is done and the stock is dried I start laying down light coats of the Krylon Fusion, giving each coat a couple minutes to "flash off". Once I have that looking good I will let the color coats dry for about and hour, then I hit it with a couple of coats of Krylon satin or matte clear. Krylon says that every Krylon paint is designed to "bond" to other Krylon paints, in my experience that seems to be the case.
The two or so coats of the clear really do a lot to protect the color coats. This gives a pretty wear resistant finish. In fact I have a couple stocks I did about two years ago that have been used hard and show little to no wear.

Methinks he's meaning after Paris has had the twelve-pack. JK.

Here's a target I shot with my boat paddle. First shot was form a clean and oiled bore.

That rifle is blue, not stainless and the stock has been left black. It came with wooden insert panels which I didn't care for. Called Ruger and ordered the synthetic inserts. Still have the wooden inserts if someone wants them.

No, I'm not a Ruger bigot - just an unabashed fan of their revolvers, M77's and #1's.

THOMASMAGNUM -

That is a good looking paddle.

Did the paint make it slippery when wet?
