My Father passed away recently and left me, along with 6 other long guns, a Savage 250-3000 s/n 58444X and has a Redfield 3x9 variable scope. It is in great condition. I know nothing of this gun, but this forum has been very informative.
The "oval" has "23B" on the front of the lever and the model is 250-3000 with "SP" in an oval next to it.
Can anyone enlighten me on this rifle? It does not fit in with my calibers of ammunition I keep and wonder if I should "ammo up" or sell it as he left me so many weapons I do not have room.
Thanks to all who may respond.

It was made in 1950 and is either a model EG or R. Does it have a schnabled forearm or a fat, beavertail, rounded forearm? the EG would be with the schnabled forearm and would indicate that the scope mount is not factory original. If its an R, then the scope mounting holes are factory.
Post some pics. You won't have any problem selling it around here if that is what you choose to do.
Cheers
Andrew

Schnabled forearm. I suspected the scope was added late, but the mounting threading appears to be factory. I an getting pictures of it as we speak and thank you for your reponse.
This gun appears to not have been fired much and it was in my dad's collection for more than 40 years.

I do not locate the "model 99"on the left. It must be under the scope.

Copied from the other post.. sorry for the repeat stuff. - Rory ------------------------------------- Sorry to hear about your father. I've got a 250-3000 from my father-in-law in the safe that's being held for one of my boys. The 23B and serial number both indicate a rifle made in 1950. There are only two models that it could be. A schnabel forearm indicates a 99EG, or a wide, rounded forearm would indicate a 99R. The 99R would have been factory drilled and tapped for a scope, the 99EG probably not from the factory. The 250-3000 is a great cartridge. Ballistics are similar to a 243, though I think it kicks less. Great gun for kids, women or anybody who's learning or is recoil shy. Your rifle will probably shoot the factory 100gr plenty well enough to hunt with, but if you reload you can probably get better groups with shorter bullets like the 87gr Speer Hot Core. They kill deer just fine also. Welcome to the forum! Here's a picture of my main hunting 99, it's a 1945 99EG in 300 Savage.

Thanks to all who responded. Wish my father was here to enjoy this site. You are all great Americans and knowledgeable gun enthusiasts.
After removing the scope and scope mount, I verified that it is a Model 99 EG with aftermarket drilled, tapped, and mounted 3x9 Redfield. When I get back to Texas, I ope to find the original rear site in all his stuff.
Re-assembled and shot with good grouping at 200Yds. Did not even have to re-adjust the sights.
Again, thanks to all and best to you and yours.

Hey Calhoun, here's my 99EG in .300. It has an Alaskan 2.5 post. Your buck's bigger than mine... Munnman, the .250 is a great little gun, you're going to love it.

It is a .300 in pretty decent shape. My nephew wanted it worse than I did so I sold it to him for what I had in it, but kept the scope. I actually like the looks of the G and EG better than R or (shame on me) even the F. Of course, I would like to own an F some day too.
I still can not believe in a fit of insanity I sold the R and gave my last EG to my son in law, leaving me without a 99 in the safe. Oh well, not for long! Gary

Working on it Rory, working on it. Fortunately, I don't need safe queens, and probably can't afford them - just want a couple of solid usable guns. I like to shoot and hunt with them. Being retired has put a crimp in buying guns lately, but where there is a will...
