Hey Guys, as to not jack someone elses thread- I figured I would post my own.

What is a good light barreled rifle, that will double as a vermint gun, as well as a target gun.


By target gun, I mean- We have shoots that don't allow a muzzle diameter any larger then .66". I am thinking a .22-250 or something on the same lines.

I don't want to spend anymore then 1500 on the rifle. I already have glass for what ever the rifle ends up being.

I am open to any suggestions!

Optimum accuracy is a must, which is why I looked at the cooper 54 classic(guarenteed .5") but am wondering if this particular firearm for the intended use is worth the money.

as for an action, I am partial to the savages, easy to rebarrel, accutrigger and the floating bolt head.

Does it have to be total factory rig? If not try a Rem or Savage action with a custom tube to fit your specs.

It does not need to be factory. I was considering to build off my 5r, but the factory barrel shoots way to good!

I have a lot of love for the .204 but, bullet choice is better for the .224 and .243 calibers. The standard .223 is hard to beat I have made extremely long shots with mine and printed very impressive groups. My brothers 6mm Remington impresses me more every day, and the "little" .22-250 has always had my attention. Short answer, .223 or .22-250 has my vote.

I didnt check the diameter, but the Rem Model 7 Predator has been good to me....if can can stand flutes and camo...

Considered, cooper, weatherby sub moa, tikka, or the kimber 84m varmint.

I literally need a rifle capable of 1/2" or better to compete.

Of course my Stevens 200 shoots pretty darn well at $250.

if you have to have a little more snazzy rig, then a Savage 16 in 22.250..Stainless Barrel..

You can pick up a nicer stock from Boyd's for $100.00 if you think you need something prettier..

it will be as accurate as any other rifle you can get that costs tons more..

and all that money you saved, you can deluxe it with some awesome glass on top then...

I'd take a look at various models from Savage. They're getting tough to beat anymore in terms of accuracy for the money. I have a Model 10 Predator Hunter (may not make your minimum muzzle diameter, haven't checked) in 22-250 that shoots tiny little groups all day long. One of the most accurate rifles I've ever owned, hands-down.

The Bore diameter is the reason for this rifle. It has to be in spec.

As for savage, the only one I would consider are the target guns/action, with a good tube. In this case, the action with a tube that meets spec.

However, If I can get a firearm that will compete with it, that's a nicer gun, I may as well buy that.

I have a vx3, 6.5-20 for the top. With turrets, and a fine duplex. As for the kimber- I love it, but I am still unsure of the barrel specs. I called yesterday, and they haven't gotten back to me yet.

I keep forgetting about those! I REALLY like the Tikkas,and the little .22 cal bored ones have been singing a siren's song lately....

Sure would like ya'lls opinion on the Tikka T3's. Not that it matters as I have one on the way...

I have owned three Tikka's and there is really nothing to dislike about a Tikka, all three where MOA out of the box. 270, 7mm-08 and 223.

The tikka is a nice gun, and I can get a stainless right now for 560 in 22-250. I really need 1/2" or better in reality.

If you have a $1500 budget, why not buy the Tikka for $560 and put a good portion of the remaining $940 into a quality barrel job?

Not every rifle, rifle barrel, or rifle shooter is capable of shooting 0.5 MOA or better on a regular basis, but a quality barrel installed in a properly bedded stock by somebody who knows what he is doing is probably going to get you closer than most factory production rifles.

I have owned two Tikka 223's in stainless synthetic and two in wood stocks, both wood stocked ones shot right at 1/2" groups - both synthetic stocked ones shot slightly larger groups.

Coincidence - I don't know but I do know that after seeing how well my wood stocked Tikka's shot two friends bought wood stocked ones and both of theirs are 1/2" shooters.

One thing you may want to consider, if you are thinking of a 223, is that on all of mine the magazine length limited the overall length of the cartridge to the point where the bullet would not seat near the lands. But, with that being said it certainly didn't hurt the accuracy of them that I could tell.

Another thing that you may want to consider - if your club allows replacement triggers. Replacement trigger availability is limited on Tikka's, on the other hand with a spring change they will easily adjust to around 1 lb.

Just more things to thing about - drover
