I just picked mine up tuesday evening, it is a 338 win mag. now instead of buying rifles i am going to customize the rifles that i have. first on the list is

300 win mag currently being rechambered to 300 dakota

.243 will be the next project, it will be rechambered to 25/284, and restocked with a mcswirly

.338 win mag will be rechambered to 330 dakota already have a mickey stock for this one.

270wsm will be rebarreled with a custom tube and get restocked with a mcswirly

.22-250 will be restocked with a mcswirly and later rebarreled

.17 hmr will stay the same because it is pretty much perfect

but if i can sneak one more 22lr past the wife it will be a bolt action of some sort...................blake

That's easy, make it a .17 Remington. Or maybe a 300 Weatherby. No, make it a 375 H&H.

Pre 64 Model 70....375 H&H in pristine condition with dark wood. A pipe dream...

Painless,

Just curious as to why you are rechambering to the Dakota chambers over the standard garden variety Winchesters?

I do like the idea of chambering the 375 Dakota, which gives 375 H&H performance on a 30-06 length action. But the Winchester and Dakota chambers you are assessing are already that length.

I know personal preference is the ultimate driving force and no real reason is needed other than that, again, I was just curious.

Take Care,

painless: While the .330 Dakota is a great cartridge, let me at least try to confuse you a little (if you don't mind). Here it goes: You can take a .338WM and replace the tube with a .375 Taylor, and have the .338 shooting .375 bullets. Best of all, the ballistics are almost identical to the .375 H&H's.

TBear,

I have owned and shot a lot of rifles over the years, but now I am moving a lot of them out to kids and grandkids. So far I am keeping a .308 Win and a .376 Steyr. I will save something over .400" too.

If you don't have a good bolt-action .22 LR, get one.

jim

I have an itch for a .416 Taylor or a .458 Win Mag loaded to give .450/400 performance in a compact package for my over .40 choice, sort of like my .376 Steyr Pro Hunter vs my old Model 70 .375 H&H. I've never had a top of the line bolt action .22 either. The US Navy did "loan" me one for rifle competition back in the good old bad old days. I love the .376 Steyr with any 300 grain bullet at 2380+ fps. BL(C)2 and Varget seem to give the best results so far. My current deer rifle is a 6.5x55mm, replacing a .22-250, .25-06 and .308 Win. Did I mention I'm waiting on my Remington Custom shop .338 Win Mag? I guess a rifle looney is never cured completely.

You don't have a good rifle for the big stuff. You need something in the range of 338 wm up to 416 rem.

ONLY ONE RIFLE??? How boring!!!!!!!
Toss up between my .300 Weatherby or .338 Win.

Two rifles it would be my .270 and .338.

tbear99,

A 270 of some kind would be a good choice but keep it light. Like many others on these forums I have quite a few chamberings and the Kimber Montana I am using now in 270 WSM is filling both the woods rifle niche and the long range one also.

The rifle, at 6.3 lbs sans scope, is making me wonder why I got the 260 Remington.

Prolly a 7WSM Kimber, maybe rebarreled to 6.5mm.
And Rossi, the Dakota will push a 270g to 2900 fps, and that's by the book. I'm sure it could be made to go faster. The case capacity is about that of the blown-out H&H, ala 375 Weatherby. Definitely a step up. Same goes for 338, etc.
Nice rounds, just a bit obscure for most tastes.

Another 1885 in 6.5/284.
But because I don't think they will make one from the factory, I don't have to worry about buying only "one more rifle"!

Um, how about a Thompson Encore stainless & thumbhole walnut with a box of assorted barrels, you know, kind of a package deal... Can I have that? Or is that cheating? I guess it's kind of like using one of your 3 magic wishes for more wishes huh?
Allright fine, make mine a Wheatherby Mark V Delux in .460 Wheatherby mag. But you have to buy it for me & I need shells too, but I refuse to shoot it, I just want to make you pay for posting such a cruel question.

Have a Win. 70 Classic in 338, and a lot of deer rifles 30 cal. and under. Also have that quality 22 bolt gun (Sako Finnfire)
Am thinking...I've Never owned a 35 cal. rifle. 'cept the wifes Browning 92 in .357 mag. (that don't count!)
Bought a 700 ADL in 30-06 to build a 35 Whelen on, but found a 700 classic in 257 roberts calling my name, so I had to use the ADL as part trade.
Now, that 35 is "whispering" to me again...
Am thinking a 358 Win. on a short action Rem. With a 20" barrel and Micmillan mtn. stock, might be the "cats whiskers"
All I need is the "funds"

Currently own:

22 LR - Marlin Golden 39A lever action
223 Rem - Mini-14 (180 series, era 1976)
223 Rem - NEF Handi Rifle
308 Win - Savage 11F
45-70 Govt - Marlin Guide Gun

So what I'm missing is a medium caliber magnum for long range delivery.

To fill that gap I'm already considering a Remington 700 BDL SS in 338 RUM.

But I held one of those cartridges in my hand today, and all I could think of was, "That's gotta hurt."

I have a .260, .280, .270 and 30/06 in Ruger 77 MKII's, and a 7-08 Winchester Featherweight. At any one point they are all my favorites. I love the .280, and it's accurate as all get out. The .270 is a long time favorite and shoots like a laser. I feel naked without a 30/06. The .260 is my all time favorite. The 7mm-08 is a must have for me.
So, I guess I'm really a lucky man, I have all I need.
If I could (and I'm sure I will) have only one more, it would more than likely be a heavy barreled .222. I've always wanted an accurate target/varmint rifle in .222 to play with, but they never seem to be available. I wish Ruger would chamber the M77 target in .222, and I'll probably have one rebarreled some day.
