Needed something to do today so my son and I went shed hunting here in central Ks. Found one, not worth bragging about. Haven't done this before so not sure on the timeing of it. Havn't seen many bucks out and about by the house and I'm not too close to the hunting ground to see them there. Guess the question is am I to late ,early, or about right? The good thing about it being a little muddy around here is all the good trails.

I'm guessing you are about right. Deer season here actually closed Sunday (Feb. 28th) and almost every buck I saw had already dropped.

I've also browsed some other research that suggest most deer in a given area actually drop their antlers in a short period of time like within a 2 week span, so if you found some I would think you are on the right track.

You can up your odds by looking in likely places. Fence lines are great places or anywhere else a deer commonly jumps.

Deer are funny the way they drop. I've worked with some pen deer on research projects and literally one day you can't knock them off if you try and the next day they jump a 3 foot fence and they both fall off at once.

I have found more in the bedding areas than anywhere, but fence lines are good. Open field where they feed offer the advantage of being able to spot them from a distance.

Down here in S. TX, I saw 6 bucks still carrying both sides just 10 days ago. Kind of surprised me after the drought and tough winter we have had.

Found my first of the year on saturday, a matched 4x4 in Hickman Co. (TN) and it's only the second pair I've found togehter. We are still seeing deer with both antlers, even saw a 5x5 chasing a doe last wedensday, so the odds aren't as good to find any as they will be. I mostly look in the edges of fields, especialy the south facing edges. It's so hard to look in the woods with so much visual clutter-everything looks like an antler. I'll head to Ill. sometime this month to look-it's incredible how much easier it is there (like deer hunting-more/older bucks). The best place I've ever shed hunted was along the Powder river in Montana. No place like it.

Almost all our bucks still have antlers. I've actually seen them all 3 ways come the 1st of April on opener of Turkey, nothing, velvet nubs, and a hard horned big 8 point...

Our bucks are all grouped up again thats why I know most all still have their antlers.

Me and a friend went rabbit hunting yesterday afternoon. We pulled the four wheelers up to where we kicked the dogs out and nearly ran over a really nice 5 point shed from a bucks right side. Got to looking around for the other one and found another right side shed just a few feet away...4 point little smaller than the first, kept our eyes peeled for the rest of the hunt and ended up finding 5 sheds, all right sides with the first being the largest. Ive never found so many so close together with all of these being within 100 yards of each other, were still scratching our heads over the right side deal though...

You're probably just about right between now and spring greenup. It's generally easier to spot them if there's no snow in my opinion, and thats not usually a problem by me.

My son passed this buck at 12 yards in bow season(early October). He found the bucks first shed the 3rd week of February, and the second shed a day later and less that 100 yards from the first one.

I was in Iowa the first week of January with a friend and we saw multiple bucks that had dropped both sides.

I was out in eastern Colorado and SW Kansas for 2 days last week and saw multiple bucks packing both antlers. Crazy how that works, I would have guessed that most would have already shed

I have 3 sets of big mule deer sheds that I mounted on skulls, I'll post a few pics as soon as I take some

I'll say Tom, I wish you had too, that is an excellent antler and the pic with your son truely exemplifies it's size. That is a GREAT pic by the way, I love it, beautiful pic of your son and a great antler, right down to the background.

We don't seem to grow them quite that big here in the Peoples Socialist Republic of New Jersey.

Great pics Tom.

looks like an excellent helper to have tagging along, good stuff. You've got a lot of great times ahead of you with that little dude.

He's got a little adventure in his eyes. grin

I've only found about 1/2 dozen sheds, but EVERY one of them is the right side.

Weird.
