I am trying to plan a DIY Caribou hunt for 2011 and would like to know if anyone has any first hand knowledge of Caribou hunting on Adak Island. I have found some info on the web but would like to know if it is worth my time to pursue further.

If you couldn't get a good ways from town and the little bit of roads they have I'd not go. Thinking a BIG boat is about the only way around the island, the weather out there can be something really special.

On the plus side, you won't have to worry about getting maced in a bus whilst the Navy Shore Patrol are taking you back to your ship, don't ask.

Good friend of mine did a hunt a couple of years ago. Camped on the island and was wet the entire hunt. Bumped into a few folks at the airport that hunted from a boat.

Those hunters had the vantage point of the water to spot the caribou and navigate around the island particularly when the fog was bad.

Plus they were dry every night. Well worth the money for the boat feature.

If you're into expensive air fair and nasty weather, go for it.

Me, I'd rather fly up to Kotzebue and have a bush pilot drop me off for a week.

I hunted there in Oct. 2005. Took a 376" bull after 6 days of looking at and passing on several others. It is wet, windy, and airfair can be expensive. A boat is the best way to get around the island. I had a great time.

Wow, I've been by Adak in a boat, and there is a beautiful woman behind every tree.

Hunting there would be an adventure! Let us know how it goes!

That's because there are no women AND no trees. I can think of several better and cheaper places to hunt caribou than Adak. I've got a friend that's been there 3 times with his sons and they've taken a grand total of 2 small cows between them. Pretty freakin expensive hunt for such a small amount of meat IMO.

That's ok, I'll ass shoot a dink.

What do ya mean no trees....I visited Adak National Forest when I was there.

I was working on a project for the Navy though. Great thing. When we got off the plane, instead of being greeted by flight attendants, we were greeted by an MP with his M16, sidearm and K9. Still, it was an experience. I hiked around and saw no caribou though, albeit, I was near the base. I'd love to go back.

Thanks for the help. Adak still sounds interesting by boat but I think I will look a little further. My goal is a fairly reasonable price but I have no issues roughing it.
