I'm looking for a .300 WSM to add my battery. I want a stainless/synthetic job for bad weather; and accuracy is a factor, but need to keep it light and handy at the same time.
'Think: ultimate, long range, super light weight, all weather, rifle'.
I have a Kimber M84 in .243 that I like ,and it's concept I'm looking for, but they only offer the .300 WSM in the longer action.
Control feeding is not so much a concern, as my 'DGR' arena is already covered.
A custom would be nice, maybe with a fluted barrel. Just wondering what those here, that looked for the same sorta rig came up with. Can be great food for thought!

The 8400 wsm is not made on their long action. It is bigger around than the 84 but not the action that they use on the belted magnums and 06 based cartridges. Any wsm that You get is going to be bigger than an 84 because of the diameter of the rd. I have 4 Kimber centerfires 2 84's, 257R and a 308. 2 8400's 270wsm and a 300wsm. IMO they are the lightest and best handling of any reasonably priced rifle, all mine shoot much less than MOA with what they like. The montana stock really sucks up the apparent recoil on the 300.

One of the new Extreme Weather's is probably the best out of the box choice IMO.
I did a 325wsm with a #2 barrel, edge compact stock, and winchester action. With a Nikon scope in Talley Lightweights my rifle weighs just over 7lbs.
Light enough to pack all day, but accurate enough for anything I would ever use the 325 for.
I also am in the process of putting together a Stiller Action, Edge Stock and fluted #4 barrel rifle that will weigh just over 8lbs for my true "long range" work.

Hillbilly.......Now just so you know, lightweight long range rifles are not very common place, especially in a caliber like the .300WSM. Heavier rifles are steadier and produce better accuracy down range as a general rule.
Packing a 6.5 to 7 pound hunting rifle in the mountains is indeed resonable but most hunters using such a rifle are going to be shooting no more than 250 yards on big game animals.

Do yourself a favor and don't try to reinvent the wheel. Kimber has nearly perfected the "lightweight 300 WSM"... I've used mine on deer, antelope and elk from 90 to 547 yards. It works and IS a short action.

If I went 300 Wizzum the Kimber is the only way I would fly also. It's perfection in that chambering.

The Kimber is a nice rig but personally I like the feel of the A7 better, I like the feel of the stock and the extra weight in the tube but dats just me.
The last time I weighed the two side by side the Montana 300 wsm weighed in @ 6lbs and 3 oz's,and the A7/300 wsm came in @ 5 lbs 14 oz's which kind of suprised me being as it had a stouter tube on it.
And the T3 in a stls would shoot balls out and feed like a bugger as well and if I recall right it also weighed 6 lbs 3 oz's.

Dober, my A7 300WSM weighs right around 7lbs with Talley LW's, a 2-7x33 Leupold and an ounce or two of bedding material. It's about 7lbs 7ozs with 3 down and one of Pat's slings.
I also like the stock and 'heavier' barrel(.615" at the muzzle if I remember correctly). It's accurate, has an excellent trigger and is hands down the smoothest feeding rifle I've ever owned. The stock isn't as solid feeling as a Montana's but I bedded it and ain't worried one bit about a shifting POI. The 'plastic' took awhile to get used too but honestly, once a guy is out hunting or shooting you don't even think about it.

I like the Sako's and have a few older one's in other calibers. I do like the Sako 85 however a little more then the A7. The only problem I have with it is that I have to chop the stocks off to get the correct length of pull for myself. I will have to do some research to see if it can be altered in length, as they are not straight cut, and a little complicated at the pad juncture. An aftermarket stock will run me another $360 or so. But, it is a good option. Thanks for all the input guys. I see the Tikka's are becoming quite popular.

I wanted the same thing as you... light carry rifle but more than capable out to 750 yards in hunting situations...
I ended up building a 7 WSM with a 24" mag contour barrel, wyatt's box, Mc Edge stock. I'm using the 140 AB's at 3300 fps and it'll hold 1/2-3/4 MOA all the way out to 700 yards prone from bags and a bipod.
IIRC, it's around 6 1/4- 6 1/2# before optics.
Recoil seems moderately heavy, but definetly not uncomfortable.

Now that sounds like a nice rig!
What r you burning for powder with the 140's, and how do you have it scoped?

I saw exactly what you are looking for at the Shot Show in January. H-S Precision had a booth there and they had a wonderfull rifle chambered in 300 WSM that only weighed in at 6 pounds. What a nice rifle that was superbly balanced.
You should check with H-S Precision and see what they have available. I, at least, was very impressed.
In fact, all of the H-S offererings were impressive.

I think that's the same rifle that the local SW has except in 27WSM, sure has a nice feel to it.

(side note, a good bud has a HS WSM rifle for sale but it's not a lightweight, pm me if you wish for more info, thinking it's pretty darn pristine and sounds like a good shooter)
